TAMPA - The concept of an annual gun buyback program for Hillsborough County got an icy reception from county commissioners, several of whom questioned whether such a plan would make a difference in gun violence.
Commissioner Lesley Miller, whose son was a shooting victim, said he doubts whether anyone with criminal intent would ever show up at a gun buyback.
"The people that want to have the handguns and do the violent crimes in Hillsborough County and across this country are not going to turn them in," Miller said.
The idea came from Commissioner Kevin Beckner, who agreed that a buyback program won't prevent another massacre or end gun violence altogether. But he argued that they make a difference.
"The premise is so simple. One less gun on the street or in the house is one less opportunity that that firearm is going to be involved in an incident of gun violence," Beckner said.

On the other side of the Bay: St. Pete Councilman wants gun control dialogue
Never thought I'd find myself agreeing with Kevin Beckner. Remember, however, that he only said that he doesn't think it would financially responsible for the City to do it. He's completely on board with the Hillsborough County Sheriff doing it, and they're doing one soon.
What I find amusing is that HCSO is actually out saying that they usually have antiques and rusty old guns turned in and a majority of turn-ins come from the elderly. Gang bangers never turn in guns.
The price for my gun is $8 million. There are some new weapons I would like to buy.
Just wondering, mind you.
“The premise is so simple. One less gun(Automobile, Alcoholic drink, Penis, Knife and Baseball bat) on the street or in the house is one less opportunity that that firearm(Automobile, Alcoholic drink, Penis, Knife and Baseball bat) is going to be involved in an incident of gun( Fatal car crash, Drunken Escapade, Rape/Sodomy, O.J. incident or Skull bashing) violence,” Beckner said.
It works for me just like Prohibition and U.S.Border laws on Immigration!
Simple premises for simple minds. How many millions of guns are out there causing utterly no harm whatsoever? How many guns are used in a defensive manner by simple brandishment, thereby reducing overall violence in this country?
Now, how much gun violence is triggered by the war on (some) drugs? How much by urban thug culture? Those are the hard subjects to tackle, but the ones that bear the brunt of the blame for gun violence in this country. But raise the drug war and too many conservatives are unwilling to budge, and raise thug culture and too many liberals shriek 'racist!'

“I was just wondering, WHAT IF: These are “no questions asked” events?, What would happen if a number of entrepreneurs were to show up with a few VERY cheaply made zip-guns, say 3/4” water pipe shotguns made as inexpensively as possible, then claim the $200 or so “reward” for them? What if massive numbers of people were to start showing up at these events around the country and cashing..., sorry, I mean surrendering these “evil” devices for their 200 or so bucks? Would it be a form of guerrilla war against the statists? Would it be poetic justice? Would it be profitable?”
Opposition to this political street theater is ramping up all over the country:

Like in any government, they ruin it because they are backwards. They think they are helping though their polices punish the working man; the same man/woman who is living under the rule of law. Why not give the police power -the assistance/the training to go into the gang neighborhoods to reduce crimes/shooting murders rape.. Now, the commissioners want nothing to do with street gangs (or basically handle the gangs secretly or to even ignore it making the gangs more influential. See Chicago LA Richmond VA and on. I think if a person is in need of money, they will probably sell a handgun though overtime will re buy one. I have never known a soul who goes in to the cops to turn in a handgun for money or otherwise. Look how they did in New Orleans; confiscated handguns. That was totally wrong to go in any neighborhood under those circumstances of the weather and do that to those citizens. The poor neighborhoods went along with it mostly due to the leanings/control they have been given/taught by the party in which they do support (vs. refusing to allow it to occur) Liberal programs are the problem/don't need more of them forced in our lives.
