Austin might soon ditch a three-decade-old policy of requiring downtown buildings and tenant businesses to have a minimum number of parking spaces tied either to square footage or the number of condos and apartments in a building.
Supporters of the move say the minimum requirement has caused a parking surplus downtown, encouraging people to use their cars rather than bikes, buses and rail. Take away that requirement, they say, and eventually garage parking will become a more scarce (and expensive) resource, encouraging people to use alternative transportation.

Good grief . There is no parking in Austin .
More likely, this asinine move will end all discretionary trips to downtown. Downtown merchants will be closing up shop, and relocating to the suburban malls.
I’m willing to ignore this, because according to Texans I’ve met, Austin is not actually a part of Texas.
Never really been to DT Austin, but my city, Tulsa, does have a surplus of parking because of zoning regulations. Not just in Downtown but also in the strip malls where more than half the spaces are never full.
Is this not just an easing of zoning regulations? Can the property owner make more parking if he chooses?
The article mentions rail. Does Austin have rail?
That was my instant perspective. Sixth Street parking? It is to laugh.....
Austin should have a lot of rail... to run the leftist asshats out of town on.
First I’ve heard of it.
Best wishes. But anyone with HALF A BRAIN will provide parking.
Austin: the Portland of Texas....
Pay parking is geographically associated with Peoples' Republics.
Austin: the Portland of Texas....
It's Texas. Why not add more of these instead?

Austin has the Metrorail. One train that starts downtown and heads north to stop in Leander. I ride it to work sometimes. Faster than the bus. Way cheaper than a car.
How much do you pay a month?
That will slow economic activity in the city. Who wants to take public transportation and walk or bike in S. Texas heat?
Agenda 21 folks..agenda 21.
Ah, the authors of Agenda 21 are smiling.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Austin (on business) and it’s one of the few cities I’ve enjoyed simply because you can park with a fair amount of ease. I tend to avoid spending much time in other cities where attempting to park just raises blood pressure.
I wonder how that will work out for them.....
