The 9mm is a great round, and in my last concealed carry post I covered some great concealed carry guns built around that caliber. However, there are a lot of handguns in larger calibers that are perfect for concealed carry as well -- that are also designed for concealed carry -- and these guns carry the benefit of having more knock down power, or more one-shot stopping power.
Specifically, I'm thinking about handguns chambered in .40 and .45 caliber.
To cover these rounds, I'm going to examine the Glock 27 in .40, the Smith & Wesson M&P in .45, and the Springfield XDS in .45.
Let's begin with the Glock 27.
Just as I wrote concerning the Glock 26 in an earlier post, the Glock 27 is as close to handgun perfection as mankind can witness in this world. It is compact, unbelievably durable, and it shoots any kind of factory-loaded ammo you want to put through it.
Like the Glock 26 in 9mm, the Glock 27 in .40 provides great second shot accuracy for those who take the time to practice, practice, practice. Unlike the 26, the model 27 shoots the potent .40 cal round. This round is very popular with federal agencies and police departments and is a concealed carry staple because of its raw stopping power.
For anyone unfamiliar with the .40 cal round, it is slightly more expensive to buy than 9mm, but not significantly so. And plus-P hollow points in .40 cal are simply a force to be reckoned with.
The Glock 27 comes standard with two 9 round magazines, and it's so popular that accessories galore -- holsters, lights, lasers, etc. -- are readily available for it.

Dang, looks like that 10mm has afterburners!
Seriously, looks like a secondary explosion!
bfl
wow. That 10mm looks like a nuke detonation! I’ll be researching that monster today.
FBI considered it but went with the .40 instead. Caint find 10mm easily. Shot .40 before and they have a healthy kick. I can control and get rounds on target.

The ATF has given Arsenal the green light to import their double-barreled, double-everything 1911. Arsenal turned a lot of heads a few months back when they announced their truly unique handgun, the AF2011-A1, but many assumed that the gun would never wind up for sale in the U.S., because it fires two cartridges with one pull of the trigger, making it a machine gun according to federal law.
Arsenal maintained that their double trigger design, and matching pair of sears and hammers, would not raise the hackles of the gatekeepers of the guns, and they were right on the money. From their press release:
“The US Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) has officially granted import permission and sale in the United States of America of the AF2011-A1 Second Century double barrel pistol, with a total score of 120 Points, according to Form 4590.
“Arsenal Firearms Group proudly announces the official distribution to America of the whole line of double barrel firearms and dedicated accessories starting on January the 1st 2013, through the appointed US Importer of Record, Apex International LLC of Middletown, CT and according to a ‘Direct Dealer Distribution.’
“The Company wishes to take this opportunity to thank warmly the millions of followers, enthusiasts and supporters in the United States of America and worldwide: they are part of the dream and indeed our main reason to be.”
We can’t help but be excited about this crazy handgun. Yes, it’s ridiculous, we completely agree with that. It’s two inches thick and weighs four pounds unloaded. Even with a full set of magazines it’s got a capacity of 8+8+1+1 rounds, and it’s probably going to cost a cubic foot of money.
It’s just we’re so surprised that this gun is going to even be available. How can we not want to get behind one?
Arsenal says that they will have a full line of firearms and accessories and they will launch all of it at the 2013 SHOT Show. This may mean just the AF2011-A1, but we hope it means their Second Century double 1911 chambered in .38 Super and also their highly-anticipated Strizh pistols.
Their Strizh, or Strike One as they plan to market it in the U.S., is a truly 21st century handgun, a striker-fired pistol built on either a polymer or alloy frame designed for law enforcement and competition use. The Russian ministry of defense has already announced that they intend to retire the Makarov and replace it with the Strizh.
Arsenal is a joint Russian and Italian firm that’s still just a couple of years old, but they have our attention to say the least. Their designs are innovative and promising, and the wait between now and SHOT Show is going to kill us.

With all due respect, we don’t know if your CWP knows shite from shinola. Many instructors tend to be full of BS, especially technical BS, its how they spend the required hours on CW Training that could be done in half the time.
I and probably lots of other shooters recognize that “knock you over and up against the wall” is a movie stunt. Knock down is more or less a bullet’s ability to transfer enough energy to stop or deter the shootee and sometimes it does move the subject.
I personally like 45 ACP because its analogy to getting hit with a 100 mph flying brick and transferring all the energy to the target, althoiugh the poster’s slide showing the 10mm was impressive.
Yeah... I can only shoot it out in Nevada at some of the old testing sites. Kind of a pain, but it’s worth it.
Do you remember your one millionth customer?
Not to say there is a lot of shooting in DC........
WOW!
The 10mm does look bad ass!
Didn’t the FBI have an over penetration problem? Also seems I remember the wee wristed agents couldn’t handle it either.
I don't shoot people, so I really don't know about over penetration.
G23 is near perfect compromise between the large frame and subcompact in .40.
If you're going big, the G35 is one of the finest full sized fighting handguns in production.
I have a Kimber - it’s # 17 of the Kimber Blackwater Al Hillah that Kimber did for us - well our site - it’s 1 of 66 out there...very nice with our own ATF serial number - the Blackwater logo and other features...saving it for a special day...
Kimber did produce a BW only version - but no specific site - just ours...nice little collectors item...
Whoa.... you go through Sancho or did you buy it in the US?
(No, I wasn’t there.)
WTH?
I only have room for a PF9 with those things. ;o)
Works fine for me. I’ve long since gotten used to buying my pants/shorts a size or two bigger to accommodate a Smartcarry or IWB holster.
It’s called a purse. I never go anywhere without mine! You can carry as large a firearm as you wish and conceal without difficulty.
I guess my witty repartee is on the fritz.....
Works for guys, too! Well, a "murse," anyway.
If anyone looks at you funny, just smile and think "what are you laughing at, I'm the one with a gun."
This is a family show. ;-)
I have been misinformed.
