Marines who fail rifle qualification are referred to as “nonquals” or “bayonet men” and usually receive poor proficiency/conduct marks which could limit promotion or reenlistment. Generally, they are given another chance at the range or have to wait until the next year if range quotas are filled up. We don’t get many, since the M16 is pretty easy to shoot and reasonably accurate.
