The Council on American Islamist Relations (CAIR) demanded the media drop the term “Islamist” in a commentary piece today from communications director Ibrahim Hooper, SLAM-OPED: Media Urged to Drop Term ‘Islamist’ in New Year.
In it, Hooper laments that the term “Islamist” is “used in an almost exclusively pejorative context” and unfairly labels any politically active Muslim with the term.
Hooper appears to be reacting to the term’s incorporation in 2012 into the AP Stylebook, the style manual for journalists, as follows:
Islamist — Supporter of government in accord with the laws of Islam. Those who view the Quran as a political model encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants known as jihadi.
Hooper writes that it is unfair that while those influenced by the Bible are likely to be called “Good Samaritans,” those following the Qu’ran are called “Islamists”:
As many people make promises to themselves to improve their lives or their societies in the coming year, here is a suggested New Year’s resolution for media outlets in America and worldwide: Drop the term “Islamist.”…Many Muslims who wish to serve the public good are influenced by the principles of their faith. Islam teaches Muslims to work for the welfare of humanity and to be honest and just. If this inspiration came from the Bible, such a person might well be called a Good Samaritan. But when the source is the Quran, the person is an “Islamist.”…The frequent linkage of the term “Islamist” to violence and denial of religious and human rights is also strongly promoted by Islamophobic groups and individuals who seek to launch rhetorical attacks on Islam and Muslims, without the public censure that would normally accompany such bigoted attacks on any other faith.

No, wait......let me get this straight. They DEMAND that the media drop the term "Islamist".....the very term used in their organizational name (see above).
So.....um......someone help me out here. Are they saying they are offensive even to themselves, as well as us? I'm just asking here.......
....or is this like blacks calling each other "n**ger" all the time, but God forbid a whitey call them that? Kinda like that?

After the first WTC attack; after the successful WTC attack; after the bombings and other attacks on our embassies in Beirut, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Kenya, India and Turkey; after the terrorist attacks on the Spanish trains and the London Underground; after many of the 12,800 rockets and mortars launched against civilian targets in Israel over the past 12 years, after any of the 290 suicide bombings in Pakistan or the thousands worldwide that made the news; after those honor killings and prosecutions of rape victims with particularly gruesome pictures; and after so many other Islamic events that I cannot list them all, we are reminded repeatedly that Islam is a religion of peace. Why would the term “Islamist” have developed a negative connotation, when we are reminded almost daily that Islam is peaceful?

Part of the problem is the AP’s politically correct definition of Islamist. The definition leaves out anything about imposing Koranic government through violence. Sure, violence is inherent in the Koran but any reasonable definition of Islamist would spell out the connection between Islamist and violence, which after all is why we care about it in the first place.

That name came from their deeds, the followers of the Bible tend to do good selfless deeds, while the followers of the Quran tend to kill others in the name of Islam, hence the term "Islamist".

Hey Hooper, take it up with Big Lou Dobbs...he was the one who coined the term, and aptly so.
