While Democrats frantically try to block Scott Brown from going back to the U.S. Senate, there are also increasing fears he could pose an even bigger threat as the next Massachusetts governor.
Republicans close to the departing U.S. senator said hes itching to go back to Washington to replace John Kerry, but Democrats are buzzing more about a potential Brown gubernatorial campaign in 2014. It may be tempting for Brown to run in a special election against a vulnerable Rep. Edward J. Markey, but he should reject the easy play and go for the job that really matters running the state of Massachusetts.
In the last week, there has been more speculation (about a Brown gubernatorial campaign), one top Democratic strategist said. Hed have a much better shot at (governor).
Brown could beat Markey, but its interesting that he has had little to say about the Malden Democrat since Markey announced his intentions to run for Senate. That could mean Brown is still undecided, according to some Democrats.
Brown knows Democrats will throw millions of dollars against him and use the same strategy they used last year for U.S. Sen.-elect Elizabeth Warren, trying to tie him to national Republicans. Its a winnable race for Brown but by no means an easy one, and a second Senate loss in six months would essentially end his once-promising political career.
It would be much more devastating to Democrats if a Republican such as Brown were to take over the Corner Office, and thats what has party leaders most concerned.
And Browns prospects of getting elected governor look to be much brighter than in another Senate race later this year. By 2014, Democrats also will be seriously weakened by a series of scandals and screwups under Gov. Deval Patrick, with several Democratic top lawmakers tainted or even on trial in the Probation Department patronage affair.
Brown would be a perfect choice to clean up Beacon Hill and get Democrats and Republicans to actually work together much the way former Gov. William Weld and even former Gov. Mitt Romney did.
Brown confidants say they still expect him to announce his Senate campaign once Kerry is confirmed.
If he chooses to run again for U.S. Senate, and I think he will, he will be a formidable candidate, said state Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk), a close Brown friend.
But if you were Scott Brown, who would you rather run against, Ed Markey and the entire Democratic Party, or state Treasurer Steve Grossman or Attorney General Martha Coakley?
Thats the question Brown has to answer in the next few weeks.
liberal R’s have a LIBERAL AGENDA.
How clear is that?
I like Scott.. Can’t believe in got canned for that hack Warren. Get him in there... one more Senator to gum up obamacare
Wait 'til the country sees what they're gonna get with far-left Marxist Granny Warren in the U.S. Senate for the next 6 years (Think Barbara Boxer on Steroids). They'll be begging for Scott Brown to come back.
I never thought about Brown making a run for MA governor. I did assume he would run for Senate again to replace John Effin' Kerry though.
Yep...schmucks, all of them.
Scott will win whichever race he chooses to contest for two simple reasons.
1) The low-informed voters have been sated by The One’s re-election and are back on their meds and freebies and could care less.
2) Brown will get the liberal sympathy vote from the rest of the Massachoosians.
Maine has a Republican gov and senator.
NH has Kelly Ayotte.
Exactly.
.
Republican Senator 1
Ayotte (NH)
RINO Senator 1
Collins (ME)
Republican Governor 1
LePage (ME)
Exactly. The headline should read “Republicans fear Brown may run for Governor”.
Obviously the rats would much rather not have to defend Kerry’s seat.
liberal and Republican?
no conservatives at all?
like I said originally, most FReepers have no dog in the fight
The MA Governorship IS a dead-end job. The last Governor to go on to a Cabinet post was John Volpe (for the lamentable post of Transportation) in 1969. Prior to that was Christian Herter, who at least got Secretary of State in 1959 (but it required the incapacitation and death of John Foster Dulles — even Ike only gave Herter the UNDER-Secretary position straight from the Governorship, he still had to wait 2 years).
Governor isn’t even a good stepping stone for Senator. The last Governor to win was Republican Leverett Saltonstall in 1944... and that was only because Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. had resigned midterm to enter active military duty. Democrat Foster Furcolo tried running against Saltonstall in 1954 and lost, and his consolation prize was the Governorship after Herter retired in 1956. His job AFTER the Governorship ? An ASSISTANT D.A. in Middlesex County 6 years later.
Go back further and the last Governor that went anywhere was Calvin Coolidge in 1920... and he gave up the job for the post of VICE-President (at a time when you never moved up to the top job unless the top guy bought the farm, and Harding didn’t look like he was about to keel over that year).
Lastly, excluding the circumstances surrounding Coolidge, no Massachusetts Governor has ever gone on to be President. Not one (unless you count John Hancock... who served as President of the Continental Congress).
No, in MA, Senator is the job that you want.
I bet the rats are desperate to con him into running for Governor instead.
He’s already attacking GOPSTER’s critter Markey. They’re ascared.
“Hes already attacking GOPSTERs critter Markey. Theyre ascared.”
I saw that - hilarious! Here’s an idea for Scottie: Milk containers with Markey as the missing person on them.
I’ve lived in the district for years, never seen Markey once. People that have lived in the district for decades before me, never seen the guy.
This could be interesting:

Like Howie Carr said: Lynch is a white, Catholic, pro-life, heterosexual male who has a trade besides being a politician...he’s a walking hate crime for the Democrats.
Lynch was a ‘no’ vote on ObambiCare
yes, interesting crap up there
maybe I’ll head to a Spinnner’s game and campaign all in the same day.

Conservatives and liberals
Democrats and Republicans
mix and match
conservatives are not necessarily Republican and visa versa
