Krauthammer On Fiscal Cliff Deal: "A Complete Surrender On Everything" (video)
RealClearPolitics ^ | January 1, 2013 | RealClearPolitics

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: It's possible that this is a prelude to a challenge, Thursday, to Boehner's leadership by Eric Cantor. I think it would be quite naked to do it at this late hour as a result of a split over the vote.

Look, there are a lot of conservatives in the Republican caucus in the House who hate the bill, and for good reason. This is a complete surrender on everything. The ratio of tax hikes to spending cuts is 40:1 rather than 1:1, or 1:2 or 1:3. So, it was a complete rout by the Democrats. So it's understandable.

I think what's likely to happen is that the leadership is going to look to get the 218 that it could secure to send the bill back to the Senate with an equal number of spending cuts. If they don’t get it, I think what Boehner will do is have an open vote -- as you say, unwhipped. Republicans will vote as they wish. They'll probably be enough with all the Democrats to pass this.

All the GWB tax rates all went up at midnight last night so now they can vote for this bill which is much worse than plan B, the bill that they opposed a couple weeks ago, and now say for sure that they ‘cut taxes’.

Long Time past to move on from this silly make believe game that taxes wouldn’t go up automatically. Dragging it out till now proved nothing and was stupid.

Pelosi is praising this bill on the House floor now. Its another sad day in this R controlled House session history, one of the last few days.

Apparently, the next big battle is more important, the fight over the debt ceiling. I am torn between the realities of the 2012 election and my desire to fight. I think we should regroup and fight the debt ceiling raising.

The Rats only want to raise taxes; they don't care about any real spending cuts except in national defense, as they always have. I agree the only outcome is economic collapse because the Rats will use the additional tax revenue (which is a paltry sum compared to the total debt realized by unfunded mandates) to leverage even more borrowing and spending. The stock market is being driven by the Federal Reserve buying $85 billion in T-bills per month (about a $trillion per year total), and printing fiat currency to do it. There is a limit to federal spending no matter what the damn commie rats think and the bill is going to come due very soon.

This bill sets up another $4 trillion in spending, i.e., more debt. I expect another downgrading of U S Treasuries, soaring inflation, devaluation of the dollar, a lowering of wages, soaring unemployment, a lower standard of living and a final catastrophic descent into economic hell, civil unrest and God knows what else.

There will not be a fight over the debt ceiling. obama will get everything he wants from Boehner.oaama loves humiliating Republicans as much as the Republicans enjoy being humiliated.

If they (Rs) weren't so delusional about the taxes going up they could have made a stand on cutting spending instead, but they (many) decided to put all their chips on this certainly losing hand.

YES, They should move on from this fiasco yesterday and yes prepare to fight on the debt limit spending cuts, this time they should prepare to work public opinion.

At the moment we are borrowing 46 cents out of every dollar we spend.
How long can that continue? Not much longer.

Let me go on the record to say, I was for this bill last night IF the GOP was willing to amend the bill.

Watching what is going on now is embarrassing. I don't even want to be associated with this party any more.

God help the country - America RIP

The other thing KRAUTHAMMER didn’t mention was, these ‘Permanent’ Tax rates are out the window if the RATs take over the House again in two years.

Of course if House Rs try to demand that O and Reid go along with cutting far future medicare and future SS benefits (and no cuts now) in return for the debt limit increase, I got a pretty good idea how that one will end up unless O really wants it.

I am getting a bad feeling about this already.

RE :”We cannot throw in the towel now on the debt ceiling, we have to be unified.”

I fully understand your concern. Since the election O has very successfully divided and conquered Rs, in fact since Rs took the House. They (Dems) are united as a team.

I really dont like the idea of spending and tax cuts now for future cuts in spending, yet I would really like to see O get beat at least once since 2010.

“One would have to be in denial not to see what is coming at the end of the road. If these hacks are incapable or unwilling to address the real issue, what outcome is left?”

The only outcome is that things will keep going the way they’re going until a complete collapse of the existing system either happens, or is so close to happening that the reality can no longer be denied, even by the hardened communists (of which most ‘rats are now, anyway).

Fearless prediction:
You won’t live to see any elected group of D.C. politicians — regardless of party — willingly take action that will reverse the decline. To do so would be political suicide, and very few (no?) political animal is going to commit hari-kari for the national good. That’s just not what humans (of any persuasion) do. This is to be expected.

The ship cannot be saved from foundering.
It can only be raised and salvaged -after- having sunk.

Yep. Too many special interest groups. Country too divided.
No courage to fix what is broken. Leaves only one outcome.
Tax Increases may delay it, but won’t fix it.

"I am still trying to understand what the House GOP was supposed to do. They had one chance to set the terms with the Plan B option."

Here's the thing, Boehner has made one bad deal after another starting in the 2008 lame duck session. He's allowed himself to get rolled 3, 4 or is it 5 times. Boehner never used the constitutional power of the House of Representatives to stop the onslaught. He's done nothing.

The fact that in this situation, it got to Plan B, is proof of Boehner's failure.

Plan B was the end of a process, not the beginning, so don't start your analysis with Plan B. Don't start with Casey swinging and missing for strike three. Look to the beginning. Plan B was the last straw even for "moderate" Republicans.
