WASHINGTON (AP) The contours of a deal to avert the 'fiscal cliff' emerged Monday, with Democrats and Republicans agreeing to raise tax rates on family income over $450,000 a year, increase the estate tax rate and extend unemployment benefits for one year, officials familiar with the negotiations said.
But with a midnight deadline rapidly approaching, both sides were at an impasse over whether to put off automatic, across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect on Jan. 1, and if so, how to pay for that. Democrats want to put off the cuts for one year and offset the so-called sequester with unspecified revenue.
Officials emphasized that negotiations were continuing and the emerging deal was not yet final. President Barack Obama was to speak about the status of the negotiations from the White House Monday afternoon.
The proposal in the works would raise the tax rates on family income over $450,000 from 35 percent to 39.6 percent, the same level as under former President Bill Clinton. Also, estates would be taxed at 40 percent after the first $5 million for an individual and $10 million for a couple, up from 35 percent to 40 percent.
Unemployment benefits would be extended for one year. Without the extension, 2 million people would lose benefits beginning in early January.
I resemble that remark.
“Unemployment benefits would be extended for one year.”
Sit on yer ass for another year, kids. We got this covered.
Is there anything in the works to fix the AMT?

Yup. Not a word is said by the Boehner "lead" Republicans about the real fiscal cliff, spending.
Meanwhile, the media outlets, dominated by those who would destroy this country, perpetuate the lie that spending cuts and not increasing taxes, is the"fiscal cliff".
How long can a country survive, that is being battered by such massive, destructive propaganda?

Will the Tea Party become a full-fledged political party??? Any other ideas for other parties out there?
>> The Republicans agreed to raise taxes when they accepted this deal in 2011 during the debt ceiling.
Yeah, but look at the payoff for that clever scheme! Just like McConnell promised — the whole sequester-and-automatic-tax-hike thing would leave the Democrats with egg on their face. McConnell’s innovative political hardball in the summer of 2011 is largely the reason that we’ll be inaugurating President Romney in January! No More OBAMA!!! Yay!!!
... oh wait...
nevermind.

Great question. Don’t know the answer.
Hopefully, long enough to allow me to finish my preparations. ;-)
{"Gawd ... this is just SO d@mn easy!"}
I just have one question. Will the lawmakers READ the bill before signing it????
McConnell on boob tube now.
“Instead of diplomacy we got an immature egotist gloating that he got his way.”
That is worth repeating. I’d add to it an adolecent who needs someone to throw him a rattle to keep him engaged. What a complete waste of air he is.
Everything I am reading shows the Democrats getting every toy for Christmas that they asked for: $200 Billion for the perpetually "unemployed", milk subsidies, $30 Billion more "stimulus", tax hikes, tuition "credits" for Obama's people, zero Entitlement reform, etc, etc, etc.
But the military still gets gutted.
How is this a "deal?"
Never in my entire life have I seen such a blatant disregard for those who have committed so much for the defense of this nation at the expense of the do nothings who get handed a fist full of goodies at every turn.
Two bimbos in the background, middle class america...hardly, look to me like two over paid government hacks both in need of a diet.
Meanwhile, resource stocks are flying since we are debasing our currency again.
INCREASE the estate tax,
Anybody that has 5 million and above are not paying taxes anyway...that money is in a trust. Who are these idiots that think estate taxes are going up? Nobody on this site I hope.
FReepers take more care in perusing threads than our esteemed lawmakers do re: bills up for vote.
McConnell caves.
I’m disgusted by the democrats and their sycophant suckups in the media who have taken full advantage of this to blame Republicans.
Think farm land, land and other assets, it's not just about money (cash) when you wind up on the wrong side of dirt.
