Rocket Launchers Turned in During L.A. Gun Buyback Not Functional
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (KTLA) Two rocket launchers handed over to the Los Angeles Police Department during L.A.s annual Gun Buyback were not functional.
Police Chief Charlie Beck and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa showed off the launchers, which were turned in by families of former military members on December 26.
The LAPD said all along the launchers appeared to be antiquated, and probably could no longer be fired.
The department enlisted the U.S. military to investigate whether the rockets were ever stolen.
Military experts have now confirmed to the Los Angeles Times, the devices were just stripped down shells, not capable of discharging.
Authorities collected 2,037 firearms, including 75 assault weapons during Wednesdays buyback.
The event was moved up several months in response to the elementary school shooting that left 26 dead, including 20 children, in Newtown, Connecticut.
Hmmmm ... since L.A. is buying back non-functional guns at these buyback programs, I think I will turn in these "assault weapons" for cash the next time another one of these programs comes to SoCal. (heh, heh)
I am not surprised in the least.
"So basically, what we have here is an empty tube. Kind of like an olive drab sewer pipe."
You can have my empty drab olive tube when you pry it from my cold, dead......wait, did you say $200 for this empty tube?!?!?
I thought it was staged.
Will they pay for a potato gun? Not as cool looking as an expended rocket tube, but they actually shoot.
Boy do I feel safer now knowing that things off the streets! /s
I wonder if Bruce Cockburn turned his in?
hope the do that in downstate il. some pcv pipe, olive drab paint and some glue and decals, I can maybe make some money.
bobo
LOL!
The LA Mayor, Police Chief, and other morons don’t even understand they’re talking about a scary piece of green plastic tube. That’s all an AT-4 rocket launcher tube is after firing. The same is true for those scary green M72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon (LAW) tubes after firing. They’re both one shot weapons and are thrown away after use. What a bunch of knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing morons.
Nothing but an empty AT4 tube. Who ever turned these in got one over on the City of Los Angeles and a couple hundred bucks.

There is little doubt that Villagarosa and his Chief of police arm scamming the public. Buy back programs are nothing but dim witted publicity stunts that do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
That farcical exercise was tried several times in Phila., PA years ago. The hype assured that these guns would be destroyed. I think that once they were to be dumped into the Delaware River. Surprise, surprise! Some cops recognized that these weapons made ideal throw away guns. I won’t go into detail because I fully support legal law enforcement efforts and I also recognize the reality of what confronts cops on the streets.
But I have the utmost contempt for gun grabbing politicians whose security is invariably covered by armed protectors. They really do not care what happens to vulnerable, unarmed citizens. These people are of low character, but unfortunately there exists an over abundance of them holding public office in America today.
IIRC a tater gun is considered a pipe bomb by the ATF

The buybacks I’ve seen locally are no questions asked. Many of the guns were stolen and no effort made to return them to rightful owners. People turning these guns in need to be fingerprinted and subject to criminal prosecution if the guns are dirty
