Labor Dept. Spending $2M to Boost Worker 'Solidarity' in Haiti and Peru

In this photo taken Feb. 19, 2010, women work at the DKDR Haiti garment assembly factory in Port-au-Prince.

(CNSNews.com) - Labor Secretary Hilda Solis on Thursday announced a $2.2 million grant that will be used to strengthen budding labor unions in Haiti and Peru.

The taxpayer money will fund projects organized by the AFL-CIO's Solidarity Center, which aims to build a global labor union movement.

"Supporting the ability to organize and protect their rights is important to leveling the playing field for all workers," Solis said in a news release. "This grant will help organizations in Haiti and Peru engage in productive, effective negotiations with governments and employers on behalf of vulnerable workers."

In Haiti, the Solidarity Center will work with the apparel export sector, focusing particularly on issues related to freedom of association (the right to unionize), sexual harassment and forced overtime.

In Peru, the project will focus on the needs of temporary and fixed-term contract workers.

Just last week, the Labor Department awarded $35 million to address child labor in seven countries in Africa, Latin America and Indonesia.

Since 1995, the Labor Department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs has worked with other governments and international organizations to “ensure that workers around the world are treated fairly and are able to share in the benefits of the global economy.”

ILAB says it’s mission is to use all available international channels to improve working conditions, raise living standards, protect workers’ ability to exercise their rights (unionize), and address the workplace exploitation of children and other vulnerable populations.

What happened to "representative government"? Remember that? It was the one in which the peoples representatives were "elected" by the people to make decisions, on among other things, how the peoples tax money was spent. Looks like the 'great usurper' and his comrades like this Solis have taken it upon themselves to ignore the peoples Congress and do as they damned well please....again.

We borrow money from China, for example, and then transfer millions to foreign countries as aid. America can't even defend it's own borders against a rogue nation like Mexico, yet our 'leaders' shovel money into other nations after shoveling it into their troughs. NO tax increase, rather a government DECREASE!

Why do we have a Congress? If they constantly allow themselves to be circumvented on things such as our government not just actively building labor unions in other Countries, (which we have no business doing), but overthrowing foriegn governments and killing their leaders who disagree with our government's agenda.

These things are done without a single vote yea or nay from our so-called representatives... so...again...why do we elect a Congress? Is it for show to keep us in line? Just imagine what it will be like once they have us disarmed.

When I visited Jamaica in 1992, the unemployment rate was over 50%. Compared to Haiti, Jamaica is considered a PROSPEROUS Island. If a person actually has a JOB in Haiti in an actual FACTORY, making actual PRODUCTS and getting actual MONEY, especially after the earthquake and several hurricanes, they are very fortunate.

What are the unions trying to do...make Haiti look like DETROIT???/s

Her father was a Teamsters shop steward in Mexico[4] and after coming to the United States, worked at the Quemetco battery recycling plant in the City of Industry in the San Gabriel Valley.[5] There he again organized for the Teamsters, to gain better health care benefits for workers...

...Her mother worked for over 20 years on the assembly line of Mattel once her children were all of school age,[3] belonged to the United Rubber Workers,[8] and was outspoken about working conditions.

Capital investment ought to pour into Haiti now!

The USA is steadily acting more like Cuba every day.

Or, the USA could resemble Madrid in 1936.

Money that could go to debt reduction. Fraud, waste, and abuse of American taxpayers.

This is just using American taxpayer money to advance and promote worldwide communist revolution.

Sometimes the US earns the hatred it receives from many other governments. We just won’t mind our own business.

Once again we are being forced to pay our tax dollars to fund our enemies and make no mistake, today’s communist controlled unions are one of our enemies.

Clinton destroyed Haiti’s burgeoning economy based on light industry of American businesses. It has taken 25 years to begin to replace that effort. Obama will, once again, prevent Haiti from rising from the ashes of US government fires.

$2 million is another one of those “drops in the bucket” that are ignored while we fight over the things least likely to get cut.

It may be just a drop in the bucket but there are enough of them to fill a supertanker.

We just won’t mind our own business.

Agreed, we need to mind our own business about 95% more often than we do.

“This is just using American taxpayer money to advance and promote worldwide communist revolution.”

Exactly. Peru is at risk for a communist move and I am sickened by the fact that our government may be helping to usher it in. Is this what Hillary was working on when she visited Peru?

Not only will “Capital Investment” POUR in, but the possibly largest contributors to Haitian Prosperity (I am speaking, of course, of Christian Ministries) will be SO delighted that the little industries they helped develop to get Haiti back on her feet will now be controlled by International Communist Unions!

“It may be just a drop in the bucket but there are enough of them to fill a supertanker.”

It’s mind-numbing how quickly these numbers add up, and while the government treats it all as funny money — what’s another million dollars among friends! — that’s real money from the pockets of hard working people who had to fork it out of their pockets to the government to pay for such nonsense.
