SALT LAKE CITY Utah has had one of the nation's highest birth rates for quite a while, but over the last four years couples have chosen to have fewer children. One big reason for that: money, and the lack thereof.
Most any parent will tell you having a child is their greatest blessing ⁸ the more than 51,000 infants born in Utah this past year are living proof of that. But the number of Utah births is decreasing.
"We have seen a decline since 2006, 2007 those were our biggest years. Those years we had about 60,000 babies born in the state," said Janice Houston, director of the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics.
With the release of the 2011 report on Utah's vital statistics, the state has seen the first four consecutive-year decline since the 1980s. Houston said that's because the birth rate is tied to the down economy.
Some of KSL TV's Facebook viewers can relate.
"We'd love to have more children, but figuring out how to provide everything save for their college is difficult in these times," wrote Meleah Williams Curtis.
"We decided it would be too hard on us to have another child, financially," Garrett McDermont wrote.

Who wants to bring a baby into an Obamanation?
We have a baby once a year whether we need it or not.
2006-07 — this wouldn’t have anything to do with the ebbing of the flood of Mexicans flowing into (and now out of) Utah, would it?
Nah...nothing to do with illegals at all.
This is true in many states across the USA.
Muslims readily do it in great numbers.
I'm an old man ,but I'll tell you from experience , its more fun trying for tricycle motors . Guess the women just don't take the men serious in Utah , when they poke a little fun.
I gather that you have been reading FR and see the gathering catastrophic storm and it doesn't bother you?
Let me rephrase that...
What thinking person wants to bring a baby into an Obamanation?
My guess is that younger Mormon couples are deciding to screw that unspoken five child benchmark number.
Psalm 127:3:
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.
Matthew 18:10
“Beware that you dont look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father.”
Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Mark 9:3637
Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.”
I gather that you have been visiting this website for many years and haven’t been impressed by its pro-God, pro-family, pro-life message?
Note that my point—and I think it went right by you—is that one wonders why anyone would want to bring a new life into this world when it appears that the social fabric of this nation is rapidly disintegrating. Opportunities for social advancement seem to me to be dramatically falling (check the unemployment numbers that come out every month).
Racial relations have probably never been worse and it looks like they are going to get much, much worse.
And they are other things that a writer could turn into an editorial column.
Yeah, I question why someone would want to bring some poor, unsuspecting soul into this maelstrom. Doing so seems to me to be a cruel act.
Mexicans will own Utah in about 30 years. The Mormons’ compassionate approach to illegal immigration will eventually put them in the minority.
The economy sucks so the choices are tougher: Get rid of a wife to afford a baby, or keep the wife and screw the baby (or sumpin' like dat...).
Thank you! As you can see, she’s quite impressed with herself.
Leftists say the same thing. "It's cruel to being a child into a world with racism, Globa Warming, nuclear weapons, and awful religious people with guns, where a woman's right to choose is constantly under threat." However, for most of them, the world isn't so cruel that they think it can go on without themselves, so we can reasonably conclude they're full of piffle.
Spoken by a woman who seems to delight in pumping out baby after baby. There was once a woman like you in a neighborhood in which my wife and I lived. She called her “Miss Mother.” Seems appropriate.
Nevertheless, if you are trying to tie me into the leftist philosophy it won’t work. My views on parenthood were well-formed when I was 18 (1958) and totally unfamiliar with leftist politics. I had seen enough of the psychic torture of being someone’s child and I resolved then that I would not inflict this upon any other. And I never did.
There are other factors, the cost of raising a child and my family’s disconcerting heredity being two of them, but that was the primary one. And I make no apologies for it.
If others get satisfaction out of it, fine. I was just pointing out that today’s social situation seems to call for a “wait and see” attitude before inflicting it upon a new arrival.
Yes, I understood what you said.
