An attorney for Hobby Lobby Stores said Thursday that the arts and crafts chain plans to defy a federal mandate requiring it to offer employees health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill, despite risking potential fines of up to $1.3 million per day.
Hobby Lobby and religious book-seller Mardel, which are owned by the same conservative Christian family, are suing to block part of the federal health care law that requires employee health-care plans to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception pills.
The companies claim the mandate violates the religious beliefs of their owners. They say the morning-after pill is tantamount to abortion because it can prevent a fertilized egg from becoming implanted in a woman's womb.
On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied the companies' request for an injunction while their lawsuit is pending, saying the stores failed to satisfy the demanding legal standard for blocking the requirement on an emergency basis. She said the companies may still challenge the regulations in the lower courts.
Kyle Duncan, who is representing Hobby Lobby on behalf of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said in a statement posted on the group's website Thursday that Hobby Lobby doesn't intend to offer its employees insurance that would cover the drug while its lawsuit is pending.
"The company will continue to provide health insurance to all qualified employees," Duncan said. "To remain true to their faith, it is not their intention, as a company, to pay for abortion-inducing drugs."
In ruling against the companies last month, U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton said churches and other religious organizations have been granted constitutional protection from the birth-control provisions but that "Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations."

Our local Boy Scout Troop, especially my grandson, shops there regularly. One of his Christmas gifts was a gift certificate. He said he likes to take me there to help him shop because he always comes out with more than the certificate was for when Grams is along!
Kinda ironic with your comment... considering that Sonic donated big to obama. No more drink specials for us!
Went to In & Out anyway.
I shopped at Hobby Lobby today.
No one is saying that abortionists, gays, lesbians, or democrats are not allowed to shop at Hobby Lobby.
What is being said is that Hobby Lobby is a privately owned business that it will offer coverage for what it deems within its guiding principles or its corporate best interest.
It is not within its guiding principles or its corporate best interest to offer abortion inducing or fertilized egg destroying drugs or procedures to its employees.
There is no compelling reason that an individual cannot buy his/her own contraception coverage if that is what they desire to buy. And, in a free market, as we are told this is, there is no reason that like-minded people cannot group together to buy this coverage on their own or that some entrepreneur will see a goldmine and set about establishing a centralized buy location.
I was there last weekend....bought a rock tumbler and some colored pencils. There was a sale going on and it was very crowded. I wonder if their stock is publicly traded.

“I need to go in and find *something* I can buy from those guys.”
You’ll find something. Tons of decor items, besides the “crafty” stuff.
“Simple solution, then. Dont offer insurance to your employees.”
Not a bad idea. Just increase their wages and then they can find the best insurance to suit their needs as individuals.
I assure you dear Freeper, I can give you a score of a hundred on your statement. I’m on the side of HHS being totally disbanded, before major chunks of it come into play.
I’m with your statement. The trick is now for the whole evil HHS law to be repealed. That is where we have a little problem. At least most of the Repub candidates where on the record as promising they would do away with it before it really goes into high gear, and allow for the Senate and HR to see the evils it represents, and give them the chance to pass bills that where in the best interest of America, that pass the Constitution.
Got a gift certificate for Christmas, yarn here I come. Use to be fabric, but my hands have gotten to clumsy from arthur, for me to quilt any more. I barely get a button sewed on now, and have to hold my crochet needle like a small child learning to eat, but at least I still have something I can do.
Edged several of the grand and great grands fleece blankets, 3 are Gator fans, and our friend who had the double stroke got a US NAVY one he sits under.
Wish they’d invent a instrument to poke holes in fleece, had to use a nut picker my husband stuck in a wooden handle when the sharpened ice pick failed to go through it...but puppy teeth go right through it.
If you send out cards for special occasions they have a great selection of religious ones, and of course there are always pens, pencils, glue, poster board, picture framing and supplies, art stuff, and put together model kits for kids. Great place for a scrap booker you know to find supplies. Yarns, fabrics, books on those subjects. Bought most of my quilt batting there when I was still able to quilt. Plus they have all the holiday decorations for every holiday. Course most of that comes from china.
Krylon sprayed on clear glass items---lots of tutorials on-line.

Good idea.
I wonder if this strikes down part of the federal discrimination law regarding religion, sex, race, etc.
And nobody in the MSM will blame the Gov. It's all the evil Corperations doing.
