Around 1690, Marc-Antoine Charpentier wrote a Christmas Midnight Mass where the tunes were all drawn from French Christmas carols of the era. There are several recordings from the 1960's that use modern instruments and place the piece in the early Baroque.

Then in 1997 Marc Minkowski came along with the Musicians of the Louvre and made a recording that places the mass firmly in the late Renaissance, and it's a very convincing recording. Last year all movements of the mass were available, but this year all but the first movement have been blocked from the US. So enjoy a sound that is foreign to modern ears. Catch the improvisation on the organ at the end.
