The World's Largest Naval Station Is Packed Tight For Christmas

Robert Johnson
December 24,2012

The Navy does its best to get troops home for the holidays when it can, but this display at Norfolk Naval base is still more the exception than the rule.

Nine "Flattops," five aircraft carriers, and four amphibious assault ships, are crammed together here at Norfolk among smaller ships and nuclear submarines from December 20, Navy photos. The nine flattops alone, number more than all eight battleships at Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The aircraft carriers USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are in port at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the world’s largest naval station.

Still, you have to admit that is one hellacious display of (potential) firepower!

When you think that even one flattop today could deliver more destructive power than the entire U.S. fleet in World War II, these pictures are impressive.

It’s enough to make any tinpot dictator pause and say, “Yiiiikes ...”

After Pearl Harbor didn’t many of the top brass get retired because they positioned all the ships together? My...how times have changed.

Good morning.

First thought that came to mind: I thought Adm. Kimmel was dead. Apparently not.

I used to get detracted driving across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel by an occasional carrier or nuke sub passing under the bridge portion.

The amphibious assault ships/helicopter carriers are what the rest of the world’s navies call their “Aircraft Carriers” - none have REAL carriers (like ours).
