MARLBORO, NJ(CBSNewYork) — The National Rifle Association caused a firestorm with its proposal to put armed guards in every school, but one district in New Jersey is already heeding that call.
“I believe that having an armed police officer, law enforcement official present in our schools will give our students comfort, our town, our community comfort, and will have anybody think twice about coming into Marlboro schools,” Mayor Jon Hornik told CBS 2′s Drew Levinson.
Mayor Hornik said that he made his decision to place armed police officers in all of the district’s schools when they re-open in the New Year, before the suggestion was made by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.
The Marlboro school district already has armed police officers in some of its schools, but the high school is the only that has a full-time officer with a gun. In January all nine of the district’s schools will feature armed officers roaming the halls.
Parents in Marlboro appeared to be split on the measure.
“I think it’s a great idea with the way the world is right now, anything to keep our children safe. I think it is a wonderful idea. I think he is doing the right thing,” said Theresa Morreale.
Others disagreed.
“I really don’t think it’s necessary to have guns in school, people living in fear. That’s not how we are supposed to live here in America, we are supposed to get up every day, live our lives and do what we have to do,” said James Dottrina.
Mayor Hornik, a gun control advocate who is normally at odds with the NRA, said that the measure was necessary while the gun control debate rages.
“My first choise would be to never have a gun in our schools, but while the President and the NRA and the Congress debate policy and law, the fact is there are guns out there. How many times do we have to see these kinds of mass shootings before we decide to protect our kids,” the Mayor explained.
Mayor Hornik told CBS 2 that the police department and the board of education have endorsed his plan, funds will come out of the board of education’s budget.
Governor Chris Christie has already said that he does not endorse the idea of armed officers in schools.
In New York, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn called the NRA’s plan stupid and asinine, and State Senator Malcolm Smith called for NRA leadership to resign.

Schools have been going to hell for years. An armed police officer is exactly what they need. Even without these shooting incidents. This is a thing that has been a long time coming.

Heywood is tough to pin down.
I’d be amazed if many urban NJ school didn’t already have police officers assigned.
I am dumbfounded by those that think having a police officer in a school to protect the school children is a bad idea. I bet just like this school district there are lots of schools already doing this.
What? School children will have the same kind of protection that the president, congress, bank employees, media, Hollywood, auction personnel, state legislators, jewelers, factory workers, business executives, credit unions, defense workers, drug barons and cabinet secretaries have received for decades or centuries?
I agree. I have to say that I have never been one for a police state as they say, but police in schools does not a police state make.
I think they will serve as a visual deterrent to not only outside shooters but also potential inside shooters that could originate form within the student body as has happened in the past.
I don’t see how it can hurt for a school to show that it can put up a trained armed defense, I think it can only help. I also think that there should be more than one guard.

And if it works for kids, why not adults? Why not at factories, construction sites, malls, offices? We already do so for government buildings and airports, why not extend it to the private workplace as well?
And of course, the final argument will be, that since there are now police everywhere, why should any private citizen subject own a gun?
Think long term about what this will mean.

I agree. there needs to be an actual security station with a constant roving patrol operating in shifts and in constant radio contact with the secirity station. They should be equipped with BPVs and should absolutely be trained police officers, not just civillian volunteers. If it means cutting into the school budget to do it, so be it.

I do not think that arming teachers is sufficient, although I support that being done as well.

Most people seem to be unaware there was an armed guard at Columbine.
He was an off duty deputy.
He had just begun to eat lunch on the other side of the school when the shooting began.
Whether the shooters planned - or did not plan - that timing is unknown.
It took 2 minutes before someone alerted him to the shooting, then another 2 minutes to run to the scene.
Both shooters had positioned themselves in the parking lot and had planned to mow down students after they fled from two bomb blasts in the cafeteria.
The deputy engaged one shooter from behind a car at 60 yards.
When he stopped firing to reload, both shooters ran into the school.
Later, the deputy would smash a window and fire at one shooter, forcing him to crawl along the floor out of range.
It's obvious that the liberals are letting their political agenda get in the way of common sense. They claim to be thinking about the children but it is obvious they are only thinking about their political agenda.
James and other libs have a agenda to advance, Mass shootings help them.
