Assault weapon owners cite diverse reasons for owning the guns
Rapid City Journal ^ | 22 dec 2012 | Aaron Orlowski

In the wake of the deadly Connecticut school shooting last week, one question has repeatedly surfaced in the Black Hills and across much of the country: Why would anyone want to own an assault weapon?

One thing is clear — the high-powered rifles capable of shooting multiple rounds in a hurry are in high demand. After President Barack Obama said this week he would push to renew a ban on purchasing the rifles, local gun-shop owners said the weapons have been flying off their shelves.

Meanwhile, gun owners in Rapid City cite diverse reasons for purchasing the weapons. Some say they are durable and accurate; a few see them as a financial investment or a way to exercise their constitutional rights; while others point to their value in self-protection or in the fun of target shooting.

Whatever the reason, assault-rifle owners are committed to the weapon.

"There is something kind of zen-like in setting up a bench and trying to put

I use a .223 in my 110FP bolt action to kill coyotes and coons (That’s RA-coons)that attack my chickens.

When I fire the same .223 round from an evil ASSAULT RIFLE it not only kills the coon, it cleans it, knocks the skin off, hangs it up and builds a fire under it so it cooks slow.

I made a conscious effort to go to Sports Authority and buy myself a Christmas present of a big nasty looking pellet rifle the day after Newton. Could not afford another centerfire right now.

My wife said, do you think this is a good time to do that? I said, what better time to let them know we will not back down and cower? I carried it out out of the store prominently.

Look at it as rate of fire. With 30 round mags its about 50 aimed rpm. With 10 round mags its more like 30rpm. He can kill people only 3/5 as fast. Ceteris paribus therefore he will have the opportunity to kill 3/5 as many.

That's the theoretically possible maximum rate of fire. Actual rate of fire appears to have been maybe 12 rpm with 30 round mags. Given 10 round mags, he empties a mag in 50 seconds, and takes 10 to reload. His rate of fire dropps from 12 rpm to 10rpm.

“Would high cap mags really make a substantial difference in these mass-shooting scenarios? Unless the people you’re shooting at are able to shoot back, taking an extra few seconds to change mags doesn’t seem like it’s going to change the outcome much.”

The Leftists are trying to equate assault weapons with semi-autos. Why would I want 19th century technology when I could have 20th century technology? Isn’t that basically what it’s all about? The progressives want us to regress as far back as possible. That way, the serfs, plebeians and servants cannot challenge the elites.

12rpm is way too slow. Thats a shot every 5 sec. Why should it take that long given largish targets at short range?
1 per second seems perfectly feasible given the circumstances.

I thought that was the M2 carbine (select fire version of M1 carbine).

Aha! You were the "scribbler"... Thought I had seen it on Google Images already censored like that.

Thoughtful of you! :-) What a mess!

Even at that point blank range, I can't see 7.62 X 39 hardball doing that level of damage. I suspect dum-dums or some sort of expanding slug...

What “level of damage” is needed in a stadium to start a panic stampede? 150 grains moving at even 800FPS is about like getting shot with a mild .38 Special, but with more damage since the long .30 caliber rifle slug will be keyholing and tumbling through the air. A stadium upper deck is a very big target, even at past 1,000 yards.

Indeed. A LONG time ago, when the "Brady bunch" was still called "Handgun Control, Inc.", and I was young and ignorant, I knew about the difference in crime statistics betweem handguns and long guns, and actually thought that HCI just "might" have a legitimate point. And then came the "assault weapons ban" with the full support of HCI.

At that point the "scales fell from my eyes", and I realized that the ONLY goal of the "gun control movement" was total civilian disarmament. I then joined the NRA, and have been a member since.

Nothing has changed since then. Their goal is still the same, as are their tactics.

I was confining my forensic comments to the individual cranium featured in the execution/murder in your #2 -- specifically confined to the damage inflicted by that ?single? round.

Believe me, I have zero idea how you tied my remarks in with something about the upper deck of a stadium...

WTH?!?

It’s from his book “Enemies Foreign and Domestic”, when the BATFE stages a shooting at a football game. The marksman fired into the upper level seats, killing and wounding about a dozen people, while hundreds more were killed or wounded in the panicked stampede for the exits.

So, TM likes to hype his own books -- that still makes his "stadium" comment a non sequitur when discussing the ballistic forensics of the photo linked in my #77...

I had no idea you were talking about the China execution pictures in relation to that round. The only time that round and terminal ballistics ever came up to me, was in my first book on page one. That’s what I thought you were referring too. Quite a few people have read it, BTW, enough for lots of it to become topics of conversation. As far as “TM likes to hype his books,” F.U. Jack.
Out.

Americans have been groomed for socialism for a long time. My take on any law is “what if this law were in the hands of the worst person I know?”

Would it be abused? That’s why we have a limited government and a Constitution that is fence around government power.
