Things got heated this morning on Morning Joe, when Republican congressman from Kansas, Tim Huelskamp, was asked about his thoughts on gun control following their discussion about the fiscal cliff deal. While Huelskamps opposition to an assault weapons ban was a point of contention, it was his assertion that the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. not be used to further a political agenda that sent Joe Scarborough over the edge.
Stricter legislation about assault weapons wont solve the problem, the congressman said. Its a people problem.
What has bothered me the most as a representative is how this has been politicized so quickly that somehow if we had changed one single law which as I understand it, the state of Connecticut had laws against these kind of things and somehow that would have changed things, Huelskamp said.
Pointing to his own children, Huelskamp noted that video games are an issue, so parents need to be cognizant of what their children are up to. Mental health is also an issue, he said, but its not a gun problem.
Its not a gun problem? Scarborough asked. So tell me, why do Americans need assault weapons? Why do they need these high-capacity clips? Why do they need a bushmaster? Can you tell me why?
Huelskamp countered that thereve been many misleading statements, including on that show.

Hey Scarborough, we need high capacity magazines to protect ourselves against a tyrannical government and high capacity gang members (for starters). This BS about hunting is just some red herring talking point to take the attention away from the real issue.
Absolutely amazing...
The fact of the matter is that nobody can show me even a single instance of a school shooting by kids in the 1800’s when:
-there were no background checks
-there were no age limits
-there were no waiting periods
-there were no arbitrary gun restrictions
-guns were much more easily accessible to kids
-gun safes practically did not even exist
-gun locks did not exist at all
-lever action guns in skilled hands can fire almost as fast as a semi auto AR.
Even with all of the omission of restrictions on gun ownership during this time period, still not a single person can show me even a single instance of a school shooting during this time.
It’s the culture stupid......it ain’t the guns.
And the Second Amendment was never about duck hunting or target practice; it was about stopping tyranny from taking hold. The Founding Fathers were very clear on this and this can seen in their opinions (”it is the duty of every man to at all times be armed”-Thomas Jefferson) The Second Amendment was meant to be a checks and balances, so to speak, similar to the three branches of government. It was precisely designed to act as a Sword of Damacles, which hangs over the head over every single politician.
“When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”-Thomas Jefferson
You would think the FR Search Engine could find a word like “Huelskamp” in a title. But no. I had to get in from a Google search. Needs work.
