As a die hard hockey fan, I am pretty disgusted with the whole lot of them, owners and players alike. They are doing their best, to make me a non hockey fan. Chumps.

“The simplest option might be a tournament, held in June, comprising the champions of Canada’s major junior, university and senior leagues.”

I think the national Post is a little bit provincial with this mindset. Lord Stanley’s cup long-ago ceased to be a purely Canadian matter. If the NHL was smart it would not appose a worldwide tournament to compete for the cup this year.

I say let the winner of the frozen four and the top Canadian and other foreign college teams, ,the Top minor-league team, the champion of a European Tournament, etc. meet for a playoff this spring to determine the winner of the Cup.

If the 2012-2013 National Hockey League season is lost because owners and players can’t figure out a suitable way to split billions in revenue somewhat improbably derived from grown men on skates trying to shoot a rubber disc into a net,

As opposed to billions in revenue somewhat improbably derived from unnaturally large men trying to throw a ball through a hoop.

Snark much?

I guess they can award the cup to a minor/independent league team this year.

I’ve taken crap here for standing up for soccer (not the most exciting sport, but on the international level it is fun to watch - with no commericials), but I don’t think professional hockey is much better off than soccer in the US. When the NJ Devils would win the Stanley Cup they would literally parade around the parking lot of the arena; now that they are playing in Newark they could have a real parade route with no fans lining it (and the hubcaps would be stripped from their convertibles).

When the economy gets tough I’d imagine the first thing to go is tickets to sports events; certainly seems to be the case with the NY Giants and Jets (and the Giants are a real team).
