Canada Ping!
As a die hard hockey fan, I am pretty disgusted with the whole lot of them, owners and players alike. They are doing their best, to make me a non hockey fan. Chumps.
I love the comments by one of the NHL bigwigs that awarding the trophy to anyone other than an NHL team would be “demeaning”. There used to be a time when being a professional athlete was itself the demeaning thing. Amateur athletics bore an almost sacred mantle.
Both groups have already managed to make a non-hockey fan. Going back to soccer.
The Montreal Canadians won the Stanley Cup in 1993. Justin Beiber was born in March of 1994. No Canadian team has won since. Live long Justin. Live long.
Hockey n: A game played on ice on the first two Mondays in February between Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern.
Sadly the Johnstown Chiefs no longer exist. Awarding them the Stanley Cup would have been a great PR move for hockey.
If you are near Pittsburgh next weekend there will be hockey played at the Consol Energy Center.
Ohio State, Miami U., Penn State and Robert Morris in an NCAA college hockey tournament Friday and Saturday.
“The simplest option might be a tournament, held in June, comprising the champions of Canadas major junior, university and senior leagues.”
I think the national Post is a little bit provincial with this mindset. Lord Stanley’s cup long-ago ceased to be a purely Canadian matter. If the NHL was smart it would not appose a worldwide tournament to compete for the cup this year.
I say let the winner of the frozen four and the top Canadian and other foreign college teams, ,the Top minor-league team, the champion of a European Tournament, etc. meet for a playoff this spring to determine the winner of the Cup.
Just send it back to Stanley
As opposed to billions in revenue somewhat improbably derived from unnaturally large men trying to throw a ball through a hoop.
Snark much?
I guess they can award the cup to a minor/independent league team this year.
My MN Wild actually had a promising lineup this year...sigh.
I watch my kids U18 games. Just as much fun and free.
Wow, 4000? And Utica is a D-III program.
Robert Morris is D-I but you can barely pack 1500
into their barn if they’re hanging off the rafters.
My friends kid plays for them. He loves it there. My kid applied to Cortland. Hopefully I will get to see him play there in the next couple of years.
As a Texan, Hockey? Something played on ice? Only ice i’ve got is in my drink, preferably with bourbon.
