At the police station, dispatchers began to take calls from inside the school. Authorities say the first emergency call about the shooting came in at "approximately" 9:30 a.m.
"Sandy Hook school. Caller is indicating she thinks someone is shooting in the building," a dispatcher told fire and medical personnel, according to 911 tapes.
Police and other first responders arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls.
Police report that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons at any point.
The gunman took his own life, police said. He took out a handgun and shot himself in a classroom as law enforcement officers approached, officials said.

According to reports I read the police were there in 3 to 5 minutes. The shooting started and 9:32 and was over at 9:35. 26 dead in 3 minutes.
The state will be glad to oblige. Providing armed guards will grow the state bureaucracy and public employee rolls precipitously.
The CNN producers are so out of touch they think “reporting” a 20 min response time sounds reasonable. It doesn’t matter to them if it’s true or not.

I did the same several years back on a weekend of a holiday. I called in a trespass report at 9:30AM and the sheriff deputy showed up at 2:30 PM. Only ONE deputy was on duty and he was clear across the county.
Because bullies are cowards at heart. I suspect "officer safety" union rules that require waiting for backup "when there is a possibility of multiple assailants."
The police in this country have become as much of a threat as they are an asset, particularly when it comes to funding their outrageous pensions.
try mapquest or google map to see the answer - but in a small town, 5 minutes is a long way.
