Adam Lanza, the shooter who massacred 20 children and six adults last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School, spent hours in the windowless basement of his home playing violent video games like "Call of Duty" and obsessing over "guns and military equipment."
Peter Wlasuk, a plumber who worked at the Lanza home, told The Sun that Lanza "lived in the basement" and he found it "strange."
"He had a proper set up down there computers, a bathroom, bed and desk and a TV," Wlasuk said. "There were no windows.
Wlasuk said he went down to the basement on numerous occasions while doing work at Lanza's home and said Lanza also had a "huge poster with every tank ever made" and another one with "every piece of military equipment the U.S. ever made." He said the Lanza brothers could tell "you about guns they had never seen from the 40s, 50s and 60s."
Lanza was suspected of being mentally ill and may have had Asperger's. His high school assigned him to a counselor because they feared he may harm himself but not others.
According to reports, Lanza's mother was a "a gun enthusiast who owned at least five weapons" and "took her younger son to a local firing range just days before the rampage."
A family friend told NBC that Lanza's mother said she wanted to introduce Adam to guns to teach him a "sense of responsibility."
Guns require a lot of respect and she really tried to instill that," the friend said. "And he took to it. He loved being careful with them. He made it a source of pride.

This is now apparently disputed.
If only they had a small window in that basement.....
Last I heard, they are trying to figure out if he was ever professionally diagnosed.
Bump!
thank you for link.
Like you, I would be very surprised if he had not been on one.
I had the impression over the weekend that the CT state police would make some announcements here at the first of the week. If they have, I have missed it.
>>Last I heard, they are trying to figure out if he was ever professionally diagnosed.
If he had been, whoever had worked with him is probably hunkering down, keeping a low profile, and conferring with their lawyer.
There is the possibility that the mother, Nancy Lanza did lock up the weapons. All it would take is Adam to take the keys when his mother was asleep and help himself to the arms. It has been reported that she took Adam shooting with her to teach him responsibility. Perhaps he noticed where she kept the key when she went to get guns for shooting. Perhaps she put ideas of Adam taking the guns out of her mind and did not consider the consequences of him seeing where she kept the key.
It has been reported that Nancy Lanza bought the weapons for self defense because she regarded the location of her house as a target for home invaders. She may have not considered that the real threat was within from her own son.
I would hope there will be information about Adam Lanza’s mental health and the drug(s) he was taking to manage it. This is the key to why he did it, I am sure. Also, if there was a psychologist involved with his case, there will be those who will bring lawsuits against him for his possible mismanagement of Adam’s mental health. I guess this is why so little is out there about this aspect. When there are lawsuits involved, there is a firm grip on the information.
I think there is a strong case for your thinking. I am not seeing much information about Adam's mental situation forthcoming about this case because of the potential lawsuits against the psychiatrist, if there was one, handling Adam's mental problems. I think there was, in my opinion.
Now, I can only speculate. I can imagine a kid addicted to video games with an ideal situation: A basement all to his own. He can hole himself up for months playing these games and not taking care of any responsibilities for himself. This may have troubled his mother, Nancy Lanza to no end. Adam may have added to the dynamics with statements of disrespect. The dynamics of this were volatile.
Suppose Adam was living like a pig, throwing everything around and not doing what he was asked and giving his mother psychological assault (this is the ultimate in selfish behavior). He was expecting a long life freeloading off his mother with no contribution to her life. Then, to top this off, his mother finds out he was not taking his medication. Perhaps he thinks the medication hurts his gamer performance. So, Nancy takes him to the therapist and reveals her frustration and his behavior. The therapist recommends institutionalization. In Adam's mind, this would take him from his ideal life of video games and living like a pig to virtual incarceration. Nancy tells him of his options and he decides that if he can't have his life, she can't either. Nancy is murdered in her bed; which is just the thing she bought all those weapons to protect herself against. I am sure that Adam saw the irony too. The thoughts of this are enough to make me hurl.
Then this twisted freak decides that the public also needs to pay the consequences. If he can't have the good life, then little innocents don't deserve theirs either. Society will pay with his ultimate statement. His evil statement is to show our culture what happens when it decides to take away his video games. This is the logic of a true psychopath.
I know this is all speculation, but I know the gamer culture which feeds into the human fault of selfishness.

EXCLUSIVE: Fear of being committed may have caused Connecticut gunman to snap
Just heard yesterday that she had begun the process, which may have triggered his rage.
I also heard that there is a six month waiting period for institutionalization, since there are so many claims for "crazy checks" (SSI disability).
