If there was no AA, I couldn't less if my doctor looked like Tupac Shakur as long as he had a respectable diploma.
Now....I wouldn't trust any sheepskin on the wall of a black doctor unless I knew him personally or was recommended to me from a trusted source.
Instead....I'll just keep looking down the roster until I find a Cohen or Steinberg.
These days, Patel or Park or Yee. Have you seen the new crop of residents and med students?
There is a case to be made for a degree of affirmative action because a black doctor is more likely to have an office in black neighborhoods and to understand cultural issues affecting health and communicate better with black patients than a white doctor.
I’m talking about American black doctors, not the scions of the elite of Nigeria or Barbados.
And you should measure - does the black doctor benefitting from affirmative action typically work in a black neighborhood? Does he in fact communicate more effectively with black patients? Medicine today is full of “best practices” and “measured outcomes.” If affirmative action does not result in the desired outcomes, then dump it.
And when I say a degree of affirmative action, I don’t mean that black students should be nearly four times as likely to be accepted than white or Asian students with the same grades - that’s going too far.
I won't go to one for that very reason.
I look for a Jew or a Jew or a Jew; I'm not ashamed to admit it.
All of my professionals (MD, Chiropractor, etc.) are Jewish, except my lawyer; he's a Paisano.
I will not consider anything else, especially anyone that has the chance of being an AA candidate.
I’m right there with you.
What about black airline pilots? Who knows how many are flying that don’t deserve to be.
You are so right! And I will add the name of my doctor.
Rosenberg.
