Seattle mayor calls for tightened gun controls in wake of shooting

Seattle city leaders held a press conference Friday afternoon to call for tighter gun controls in the wake of a deadly shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Mayor Mike McGinn called the massacre a "tragedy beyond words," and asked the state legislature to respond with meaningful reforms.

He urged lawmakers to close the so-called "Gun Show Loophole," which allows some weapons to be bought without a license or proper paperwork.

"They could give us more authority in the city to take action, and we have asked for that authority," he added. "They could fund, instead of as they've been doing, cutting funding for support for those that are mentally ill or unstable."

Mayor McGinn was joined by Seattle Police Chief John Diaz, who said his officers are trained annually to respond to mass shootings.

"It's unfortunate that we in law enforcement have to train the way we do each year on rapid intervention," he said. "We have to be ready in case a situation like this occurs."

Chief Diaz echoed Mayor McGinn in calling for tighter gun controls, saying the country's "gun culture" needs to change.

I stand corrected. I lost interest in basketball some time ago because of the thuggish behaviour. Though some of that same bs happens in pro football as well.

“A tragedy beyond words”
But he manages to try ... So, what does it have to do with calling for the abridgement of the natural rights of scores of millions of Americans?

That’s like a prosecutor saying to a jury, “Murderer is a horrible crime.”
What does that have to do with the guilt or innocence of the defendant?

Yet not one word about the 52 million babies who have had a hole drilled in their skull, their brain sucked out and their bodies burned.

Miserable hypocrites.

Ban all guns in Seattle?

The next thing you know they will legalize marijuana and gay marriage.

Wait. They already did that.

Ban all knives as well? On the same day, a man in China stabbed 22 school children.

“’Murderer”: murder

If they are going to confuse the issue, we bring up their state sponsored infanticide, with a difference being there are two Constitutional rights involved here: the 2nd and 5th amendments guaranteeing our God-given rights to keep and bear arms, and to life and liberty.

Two thoughts...

Rather than take guns away from law abiding citizens, perhaps we should REQUIRE them to ALWAYS carry guns.

And...

Forty years ago, perhaps half of these mass murderers would have been confined to a mental institution and would have been no threat to the public.

Re: “Ban all knives?”

Eva,

Seattle will only ban knives if the Police try to use them!

Last year one of our cops shot and killed a man on a Downtown sidewalk who may, or may not, have refused to drop a whittling knife.

The man had an incredible drunk and disorderly arrest record - like 80 arrests in 20 years.

Plus, he had clearly become more violent and more irrational in the previous two years.

However, the public and media outrage against the cop was off the charts.

The cop was investigated for murder.

I don’t think a charge was filed, but the cop finally resigned.

“What can happen at a gun show - and what can happen anywhere - is a private sale. A private citizen (ie. not a licensed firearms dealer) can sell a firearm without a background check. That’s a private transaction, period.”

I’m in Washington State and I signed up as a “member” of the “gun club” so I could go to a show and perhaps buy a gun. They run the background check on you when you join as a member, so the seller at the show doesn’t have to do it. I believe that only members (with the check) could buy guns regardless if it was a private sale or a business. But with the private no record of the sale, while with the business need to run the sale through the database with the serial numbers, etc. And I’m pretty sure no waiting period on handguns either.

Signs at the door warn that it is illegal to buy or sell weapons in the parking lot, etc.

I would recommend that Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn consider not running for reelection as mayor. McGinn should look at the real guns gunning for him and not guns that shooters like the gunman, Adam Lanza used that his mother purchased legally. McGinn’s vulnerability because of a long history of poor policy has nine candidates gunning for his position.

The only way to get rid of “gangsta guns” is to eliminate the illegal drug industry. It is almost impossible to eliminate illegal drugs especially with designer drugs able to be cooked up when another drug is eliminated. Also, when drugs are made scarce, that drives up the price, which makes more money for the drug marketer. There has to be another way.

All of this violent stuff and drug use would be reduced if we returned to a God worshiping nation where the individual loves God more than himself.

Gone are the days when such psychos were kept in institutions thanks to the ACLU lawsuits.

Gone are the days when vagrants were kept off the streets and out of our libraries again thanks to the ACLU.

Gone are the days when AMERICA was a safe place, before the ACLU.

I fear the unintended consequences from the do-gooders more than the “good” derived from them.
