Seattle city leaders held a press conference Friday afternoon to call for tighter gun controls in the wake of a deadly shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.
Mayor Mike McGinn called the massacre a "tragedy beyond words," and asked the state legislature to respond with meaningful reforms.
He urged lawmakers to close the so-called "Gun Show Loophole," which allows some weapons to be bought without a license or proper paperwork.
"They could give us more authority in the city to take action, and we have asked for that authority," he added. "They could fund, instead of as they've been doing, cutting funding for support for those that are mentally ill or unstable."
Mayor McGinn was joined by Seattle Police Chief John Diaz, who said his officers are trained annually to respond to mass shootings.
"It's unfortunate that we in law enforcement have to train the way we do each year on rapid intervention," he said. "We have to be ready in case a situation like this occurs."
Chief Diaz echoed Mayor McGinn in calling for tighter gun controls, saying the country's "gun culture" needs to change.
What an idiot.
This is the same wacko who's dream is to turn Seattle into bicycle land. Even the most ardent libs think he is a bit off
Trotting out this old horse again? There is no such thing. Any licensed dealer that sells a firearm to anyone at a gun show must run the standard background check. That makes it absolutely no different than purchasing the firearm in a regular store. No different whatsoever. Even if any part of the transaction is initiated or conducted at the gun show, the background check must be run. So there is no "lets meet in the parking lot and I'll sell this to you." It just does not happen, period.
What can happen at a gun show - and what can happen anywhere - is a private sale. A private citizen (ie. not a licensed firearms dealer) can sell a firearm without a background check. That's a private transaction, period.
Boy they are just lining up like 747s for landing aren’t they?
Is there Anyone.. Buellher...anyone? Intelligent enough to vote in Seattle? They should just annex themselves to Vancouver BC... course, nobody in Canada wants’ em...how about a slow boat to China?
He is an idiot, but look at the big picture.
Look at how the dims literally dominate the news media with their agenda.
And the repubs say nothing. They stew in silence.
Do you see 100 or 200 repubs hitting the news media with suggestions as to how to solve the problem?
And you will not, for the same reason they lost the last two presidential elections.
The mayor should tighten controls on the half-caff-latte-brewed-with-fair-trade-coffee-beans-and-organic-soy-milk sipping occuturds. Ang G-D help Seattle if the Seahawks make it to the Super Bowl or the Sonics win the NBA championship.
Sorry Mr. Mayor. The guns didn’t do it. The 20 year old crazy did. It’s not rocket science mayor. Try using your gray matter sometime.
Of course!...everytime a tragedy like this occurs moron liberals think they can get restictive gun legislation passed!
How is he going to get rid of all the gangsta guns. Please tell me. When he can come up with an answer mayhap we have grounds for negotiation.
AMEN!
I think the Sonics left that bleeding heart liberal cesspool/sewer aka Seattle a few years back. Not sure where they moved though.
gansta guns will never go away. They will just come to your house cause they know the chances are good you don’t have one! Screw these idiots!!!
Yet killing babies in the womb is just fine by these guys. Encouraged even.
The worst form of hypocrites
Oklahoma City to be exact!
Not at my house ... hee, hee. A surprise awaits one and all who attempt to be intruders. As a retired police officer, I can shoot straight and true and will not hesitate to rid my house of vermin.
The lawless are not going to follow your useless laws, Mr. mayor, and neither am I.
