Census: Whites no longer a majority in U.S. by 2043

White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2043, according to new census projections, part of a historic shift that is already reshaping the nation's schools, workforce and electorate.

The official projection, released Wednesday by the Census Bureau, now places the tipping point for the white majority a year later than previous estimates, which were made before the impact of the recent economic downturn was fully known.

America continues to grow and become more diverse due to higher birth rates among minorities, particularly for Hispanics who entered the U.S. at the height of the immigration boom in the 1990s and early 2000s. Since the mid-2000 housing bust, however, the arrival of millions of new immigrants from Mexico and other nations has slowed, pushing minority growth below its once-torrid pace.

The country's changing demographic mosaic has stark political implications, shown clearly in last month's election that gave President Barack Obama a second term — in no small part due to his support from 78 percent of non-white voters.

The non-Hispanic white population, now at 197.8 million, is projected to peak at 200 million in 2024, before entering a steady decline in absolute numbers as the massive baby boomer generation enters its golden years.

"The fast-growing demographic today is now the children of immigrants," said Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, a global expert on immigration and dean of UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, describing the rate of minority growth in the U.S. as dipping from "overdrive" to "drive." Even with slowing immigration, Suarez-Orozco says, the "die has been cast" for strong minority growth from births.

If Coulter is correct, and hispanics are increasingly the “takers” of society, then we are so damn screwed. I am no white supremacist, but recognize the classical liberal contribution to our established order that came from Europe. I recognize that Asians and other groups might even be more classical liberal than whites, but there is likely not enough of them to make up for the exploding black and hispanic populations. I really hate this whole racial politics stuff, but one cannot deny the entitlement culture that is prevalent in some ethnic groups.

I know, it is a minefield when you bring it up but I cannot avoid what I see and experience. I have to say you are correct. I'm not picking on any people of those or any minority that do get our American and Western values, many of whom are here on FR. This is not a swipe at them, but to the large groups that embrace the welfare state as well as have the attitude of "getting Whitey." I guess I'm a racial or ethnic realist where it seems like these groups practice the crab bucket syndrome where if one crab tries to crawl out, the others pull it in. That is so disturbing to me.

There are groups out there ethnic and ideological that would vote for more welfare and/or OBummer even if he gunned down 50 people in cold blood in Times Square, tied tin cans to cat's tails and make dogs eat their own vomit.

Perhaps. I’ll go look and I wonder what the date is on that. We also have a lot of legal and illegal farm workers from Central and South America and Mexico. Our Walmart carries lots of specialty Hispanic foods, including produce considered exotic in rural America, and chilis in bulk. Black grooming aids are available in the cosmetic/hair care departments. The same at the Dollar Store.

No, we aren’t the same as California, but in Milwaukee and Madison, there is a sizable population of non-whites. In La Crosse, especially on the first of the month, it is not at all unusual to see many entire Mexican families in area grocery stores.

My point was that things are changing, even in the boonies. There was a time, not that long ago, when whites were 98% of the rural population.

I remember about 1997/98 or so, when I went to rural NW Pennsylvania and NE, Ohio, we asked a young guy, about 15, directions and he called my mother, "ma'am," and me "sir." It was quite refreshing.

There are still folks who teach their children old-fashioned politeness and respect.

I will add this: the black women I see are working at Walmart. They are in their 30s/40s. Last week, I was in the line of one cashier and she was so competent and friendly, it crossed my mind to say something positive to the shift supervisor.

These people have come here and appear to be assimilating. So, perhaps we are benefiting from the minorities that really want a better life.

Thanks for the reply. We must remember that not all minorities vote that way and we must avoid the slippery slope but it can be hard at times. It’s a shame we have this going on now.

Sorry, but this post shows luck of knowledge about Russia. We have the same immigration problems with Central Asian immigrants, with the Chineese somewhere as well as inter-ethnic problems with the local Muslim minorities.

Ukraine and Belarus as well as the Baltic states is a different issue but they're too small for the USA population.
