Students suffer because 'several hundred' teachers call in sick to attend right-to-work protest in Lansing.
At least 26,000 children will miss school today because their teachers called in sick or took a vacation day to protest proposed right-to-work legislation, which is expected to pass today.
Warren Consolidated Schools, Taylor School District and Fitzgerald Public Schools are confirmed to be closed. It is also suggested that schools in Detroit and St. Johns may be missing a significant number of teachers...

This is how Snyder won. It is the result of eight years of Granholm/democrat-union incompetence.
Get back to your classroom. It's what the people voted for.
Forcing parents to scramble to provide baby sitters or worst take leave to watch their kids is very bad PR for teachers. Even poor people will start to grumble. Narrative for working parents are, we paid taxes and teachers are suppose to teach and watch our kids while we are at work!! Longer the teachers strike, the worst it becomes for them because the public will turn on them. Look what happen in liberal Chicago when the public school teachers struck.
I would love to see more former-military teachers. Officers and NCOs spend much of their time teaching complex skills to young recruits, and that experience could be used in the schools.
As for the "uncertified" teachers you mention: I would like make teachers have to take the SAT Subject Test for each subject they teach, with failure to score at the 75th percentile (or better) being grounds for dismissal.
After walking on the moon, Neil Armstrong went into teaching.
I have been homeschooling for 14 years. It is a lifestyle choice, and it is far more peaceful than dealing with the corrupt public schools. You can do it and your children will be so much better off if you do.
MI Right to-Work Battle: Union Members Shout Down Tea Party Counter-Protest
Cool. Fire ‘em all. They are probably the worst in the school districts.
If they do hire them back, make ‘em forfeit accrued pension and seniority.
Have you done this alone, or are there several families involved? That is what I am looking into. The more kids we can rescue from the government schools, the better. I WILL go it alone if I have to. I decided that a long time ago.
“Actually, the teachers got a raise in TAKE HOME pay by not having to pay union dues.”
This is their fear. They see what happened in Wisconsin, as people dropped out of unions in droves to save money. And they can offset the additional cost of Obamacare, which of course the unions support.
My unionista cousin is angry that they aren’t being strongly confronted at the capitol. They want a confrontation and they’re madder than hell that they aren’t getting it.
FReeper Jenk is tweeting from Lansing today.
I guess education really isn’t that important.
Mostly alone. Kids do have Scouts and church and neighborhood friends. We also take fun classes with the community, like art, drama.. There are always classes at Museums.
But listen, there are always groups of people to join, or who break up and rejoin other groups. Don’t get too fixed to one group, because at some point they will annoy you too.
Build you own educational philosophy and know WHY you are homeschooling.
It is a very fluid movement. My children have each spent some time in school even. We use the system for what we need. Each child is about 98%-99% on the school’s standardized tests. The schools are just about worthless to me. Don’t look at it as being alone, look at it as being independent.
You can do it.
Thanks! The people have spoken. The unions are mad as hornets! I love it!
The unionistas are now shouting “Shut it down”.
Waaa we aren’t getting our way so we don’t want anything to happen.
Now abolish tenure
How hard is it for the MSM to avoid saying that the only thing this law does is make the UNION TAX voluntary?
Some stuff is gonna get trashed before the day is over.
All wearing that pretty marxist red.
