When pundits on ABC's "This Week" Sunday discussed recent news that the Supreme Court would take up two major gay marriage cases -- challenges to the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Prop 8 -- conservative commentator George Will issued a blunt characterization of same-sex marriage's opponents.
There is something like an emerging consensus. Quite literally, the opposition to gay marriage is dying. Its old people.
According to a Politico poll out Sunday, Will is right in saying that older Americans are less likely to support gay marriage. The poll said that while 63 percent of 18 to 29 year-old supported same-sex marriage, only three in 10 seniors support it.
Here's Will's remarks on the subject in full, via Queerty:
This decision by the Supreme Court came 31 days after an Election Day in which three states for the first time endorsed same-sex marriage at the ballot box never happened beforeMaine, Maryland, and the state of Washington.
Now, the question is, how will that influence the court? It could make them say its not necessary for us to go here. They dont want to do what they did with abortion. The country was having a constructive accommodation on abortion, liberalizing abortion laws. The court yanked the subject out of democratic discourse and embittered the argument. They may say we dont want to do that, we can just let the democracy take care of this.
On the other hand, they could say its now safe to look at this because there is something like an emerging consensus. Quite literally, the opposition to gay marriage is dying. Its old people.
Republican strategist Mary Matalin added that unmarried heterosexuals with babies are "irrefutably more problematic for our culture than homosexuals getting married."

Well George, thanks to attitudes like your, ALL adherence to God’s laws are “dying”.
What do expect when consequences are denied and ignored?
I’d venture to say that you have a similar or more absolute view regarding each of the 10 Commandments.
That’s because the youth are being indoctrinated by government schools to accept gays, global warming, socialism, etc. Normal rational thought is dying out with us as well with the exception of a subset of young people getting input from us
Jesus warned us to "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's..." so you have no right to whine when Caesar screws you.
Next time listen!
Seems like we’re a country divided that Obamagabe was supposed to bring together. Guess not.
From the youth (18-30) I know I would say that it would be about 50-50 for gay marriage. Most of them though are yet to have families of their own and you will find when they do they will start to go more conservative.
Mel
Insofar as organizations exist that reject the premise that Gay is ok, they will attack them and try to bring them down.
This is the heart of the matter and the more people realize this the better. There are cases of numerous establishments that exist to serve the public. Then the so-called gays deliberately pick on the few that dare stand by the principle of their beliefs.
Photographers that did not want to do wedding photos of the gays. Bed and Breakfast operators that preferred not to allow a gay and unmarried couple to share a room. A minister that will not perform a marriage and so on. Their spitefulness and merciless pursuit of people who just want to be left alone, stamps them as very disturbed persons.
We have a case of a murder recently in Canada. Quoth the press, straight faced "He is wanted for killing his husband". I do not criticize so-called gays for simply following the original purpose of protest. This being simply to be left to their own devices.
More than acceptance, they crave approval, and the right to punish those who openly disapprove of them.
Exactly! The public schools are indoctrinating students that gay marriage is perfectly acceptable in grades K-12 and on college and university campuses students are being told that they must fight “bigotry” by supporting gay causes such as “marriage equality.”
If the tide has turned, it is because the next generation was taught to ignore sexual deviancy.
Religious people have a obvious revulsion to homosexuality and inherently know it is not normal. What some may find interesting is that atheistic biologists have come to the same conclusion. Darwinian alogarithms dictate that if a trait is not useful to the propagation of the species, it not only tends to die out, but the ecosystem actually develops mechanisms to hasten its demise so that scarce resources and space are not squandered on that which does not procreate. Both religious people and atheistic Darwinians are not surprised that homosexuals often have short sickly lives.
America’s new faith is Nihilism. Everything going on now is just symptomatic.
We got an indication of what was coming when the public was not shocked by Bill Clintons behavior.
The churches should get together on this, isolate and shame ANY church teaching that this is okay, or performing gay “marriages”. Make sure that they have to get married in scummy government offices.
I’ve been telling people. Christians are going to have to start mobilizing as a unified force against this kind of crap.
No explanation provided by the pollsters as to why opposition is so strongly pronounced when the issue is presented to the voters. The results of the various referenda questions has been lopsidedly in favor of traditional marriage.
The dying elderly (Obama’s “Bitter Clingers”) who hold moral and ethical values that enrage Obama-bots and other liberals is only one side of the coin.
The other is that the pro-queer government “education” industry has been successful in its campaign to teach children that sexual perversion is just another choice in life - like which kind of neck tatoo to get or what kind of tongue and face piercings to get.
I think Americans are sick of hearing Will and his demented queeny class yap about the beauty and equality of men who demand the overlord power to socially engineer American society and “families” around their butt holes.
If the churches all fall to embracing sodomy that is like embracing robbery and adultery. Christians do love the robber and believe in the power of redemption for sinners including people who engage in sexual sin. But you can’t pronounce that Jesus loved the sin and that a man or woman IS the sin, and do sodomy marriage cermonies in God’s name. They are no longer Christian if they do that. Period. Real Christians will have to make other arrangements to gather. They can do spiritual marriages separate from legal ones if the State tries to force them to marry homos in churches.
Reorganizing society around homosexuals is going to lead to legalized girl and boy rape. It’s Islamic and queer/liberal. Plus Will and his pervert pals think child rape is fun and harmless and they are pushing it in college sex studies. Surely they can find, teach and lead thousands of little girls and boys to put on TV to tell America kids love sex and it’s their “right.”
I don’t want to surrender organized Christianity to the buttboys. Let the liberals fall like they always do and put up with the hate.
Not that your brother has anything to do with I am going to say, but homosexuality has not been friendly to my family either. It haunted two men who were manipulated and abused by homo scout leaders in the Boy Scouts.
When I learned of it, I went Old Testiment and suggested we hunt the bastards down and kill them, but they said no. They forgive the sodomites who abused them.
But sodomy is truley deadly and liberals are big fat liars. I’m sorry for you loss and I am thankful the abused people in my family did not get diseases from the offenders. Just mental and life progress injury.
GOD KNOWS.
That was true until this election, where traditional marriage took a beating.
Gay marriage was legalized by voters in Maine, Maryland, and Washington. Minnesota failed to pass an amendment to define marriage as being between a man and a woman. Were there any victories for traditional marriage?
