This is not a good time to be starting out in life. Jobs are scarce, and those that exist often pay unexpectedly low wages. Beginning a family — always stressful and uncertain — is increasingly a stretch. The weak economy begets weak family formation. We instinctively know this; several new studies now deepen our understanding.
When the labor market operates smoothly, it creates an economic escalator. Just out of high school or college, young workers typically switch jobs frequently until they find something that fits their talent and temperament. Job changes often mean higher pay; people move to advance themselves. The more they succeed, the more confident they feel in marrying and having children.
The most startling evidence of the broken escalator is the collapse in marriages and births. Marriage has been declining for years. Now, in a new study, the Pew Research Center finds that in 2011 the U.S. birth rate (births per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44) fell to its lowest level since at least 1920, the earliest year of reliable statistics. From 2007 to 2011, the U.S. birth rate dropped almost 9 percent. The total fertility rate — the estimated number of children born to adult women in their lifetime — has fallen four straight years to 1.9 (the replacement rate is 2.1).

I saw the writing on the wall 2 years ago and decided to go to uni in a friendly yet more socially and economically stable country. My degree ends soon and going back home is the last thing I want to do (as much as that hurts to say).

Heck it’s not just kids. The financial services industries have been cutting back like crazy. Here in Chicago between the computerization of the trading floors. The looting of MF Global and PFG I know plenty of guys who are on the ropes with no prospects. In the past week alone one guy I know went from being a trader to bagging groceries another had a breakdown and entered himself in a psych ward and a third shot himself. ..three kids. All this week! In the old days if you went broke trading you just picked up another job. Now it’s much harder and these guys are older now too. I’m not saying that any of these guys are innocent. They should have prepped for a worst case scenario. Still its weird to ser such carnage.
Other circumstances caused me to become lost, but this is taking my life preserver and now I’m flailing my arms.

We saw this coming 50 years ago and made the decision to not have children that would have to live through it.
hat we have now we expected at least 20 years ago and it has only been delayed by conservatives fighting but it has only been a delay!
We are fighting a school system that has destroyed at least 40 years of youth,.

Yet, WE live in a time of great abundance where the poor outweigh the rich. Life expectancies are tipping to the late seventies and things change, they get worse they get better.
My God. Let's get a little perspective. Those who limit their child bearing to one or two do themselves, their children and their societies a disservice.
Since Malthus we have heard about the Earth not being able to support the coming swarms of people, NOW we can support more people than live on the planet from this country alone. TODAY Starvation is the result of war and poor governance, not traditional famine and inability to produce edible goods.
I spent the end of my day at a candle lighting ceremony for a support group for parents who have lost a child. The pain for all of us is terrible, but it seems even greater for those who have only the one or two children. I am so grateful that we where blessed with four children, and only wish we had four more.
the truth is, none of us is doing anything more important in life than raising the next Conservative generation.
Put a little faith in the future, have kids, have lots of them. A smart child today has a great chance of running the World tomorrow. God knows the stupid bread!
didn't change for personal reasons, but thank God for that -- there is a glut in the financial services market and many jobs have to get axed.

We are living the nightmare that was England in the 1970’s but without the hope of a big brother (the US) as potential saviour. Maybe we’ll get some good music out of it.
