Hours after NATO agreed on Tuesday to send Patriot missiles to Turkey because of the crisis in Syria, Russia delivered its first shipment of Iskander missiles to Syria.
The superior Iskander can travel at hypersonic speed of over 1.3 miles per second (Mach 6-7) and has a range of over 280 miles with pinpoint accuracy of destroying targets with its 1,500-pound warhead, a nightmare for any missile defense system.
According to Mashregh, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard media outlet, Russia had warned Turkey not to escalate the situation, but with Turkey's request for Patriot missiles, it delivered its first shipment of Iskanders to Syria.
Reporting today, Mashregh said the handover occured when Russian naval logistic vessels docked at Tartus in Syria.

———Russia delivered its first shipment of Iskander missiles-——
The article denotes cause and effect that are not necessarily related.
Unmentioned were the date of the purchase order, the contractual delivery date and how and when payment was made.
It can be argued that the missiles were ordered long ago, the Ruskies failed to deliver on time and were in fact perhaps a year late and actually got paid upon the delivery.
Putin, seeing Assad to be failing beat upon his lagging missile producers to force the actual delivery and resultant payment before Assad falls.
I think that is what really happened. Russia’s concern for Syria is only as a paying customer.
Reza Kahlili served in CIA Directorate of Operations, as a spy in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, counterterrorism expert; currently serves on the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, an advisory board authorized by Congress. He is the author of the award winning book “A Time to Betray” and regularly appears in national and international media as an expert on Iran and counterterrorism in the Middle East.
Double Agent for Iran???
Russia got a tit for tat to remove their missile from Cuba. We in turn took our missiles out of Turkey. Unknown until somewhat recently JFK did some backing down. The Russian ships never did get to the blockade. They turned around, IIRC, after JFK conceded.
Russia may be doing something similar now. They may have upped the ante hoping we’ll cut our support not only for the insurgents but also remove the Patriots.
It looks like we’ve been down this road before.
Perhaps, then again it might be the Soviets, like the dems, never let a crisis go to waste. I think we’ve missed the fact the Soviets are back and playing the Cold War game. Seems a great opportunity to make the US look bad, tie them up and destabilize the region further while sticking a finger in Israel’s eye. From the Soviet POV whats not to like.
The author has a new book out. What are the odds he is just saying this to promote his book... or ????
Time for Israel to do some Damascus flyovers with their jets the way they have done in the past, except this time with nukes!!!
12/21/12 tick tock tick tock.
The Spanish Civil War was fought with weapons from the facist, communist and democratic government who used the Spanish to test out the weapons that would be the standard in the coming World War.
I can’t deny that your thoughts are correct. There are some politics or at least perceived politics involved.
My belief stems from the fact that Russia is desperately in need of manufacturing exports that produce jobs and paying customers. It is this need that drives their current efforts. Given their negative direction jobs must be provided to persuade men to cease being alcoholics and women to cease aborting their children. The saving of Russia trumps the saving os Assad
Arms are the only real export manufacturing capability they have. Arms sales must be made. Petty rulers must be sold.
Now they have great rockets to hit Israel! Arm them with Sarin Gas and they can kill many thousands of people—all at Irans bidding. This should work out well.
That is a terrible misstatement. That region is fleetingly stable as unstable is its norm.
There is a damn good reason historians refer to the Middle East as the graveyard of empires. It is naturally unstable because there are no modern-type nations there (Israel being the exception). Egypt was headed in that direction until the Muslim Brotherhood exerted itself to reimpose Muslim hegemony.
To understand the Middle East it is imperative to recognize that existing governments are like Mafia kingdoms, dominated by a single family or clan. There is always plotting, political maneuvering and internecine cold warfare ongoing inside every ‘nation’. Being an ally brings with it the automatic suspicion that the ally is actually an enemy biding time to takeover the nation.
The only way the area will ever be stable is for Islam to disappear and genuine nation states to develop. But that, I fear, is a long way away in the future, if it ever comes about.
-——Now they have great rockets to hit Israel! ———
While that is true, it is also too late. The Israel/Syria cold war is now moot. There is revolution in Syria.
The problem for Syria can’t be solved by missiles that can hit Israel. The problem for Assad and old Syria is being alive tomorrow.
Israel should stay well away from Syria at present, remain on high alert, defend her borders, and watch carefully for "Arab Spring democratic rebels" to mount a false flag operation blaming Assad and the Syrian military.
Russia Docks Warships in Syria as NATO Arms Turkey
Supposedly we have a ship based THAD system off the coast of Syria. Will be interesting to find out the range of that THAD system. My guess is they probably can not cover the far eastern border of Turkey and Syria.
Iran aims biological warheads at Israel
Iran has 170 ballistic missiles aimed at Tel Aviv, many with biological warheads, WND has learned.
According to a source who served in Irans Intelligence Ministry and who recently defected, the Islamic regime has 170 missiles targeted at Tel Aviv from underground silos, some of which are armed with biological warheads.
The Islamic regime ruling Iran has prepared for the total destruction of Israel as well as a capability to target European capitals, he said.
As reported in the Washington Times in August, a commentary in Mashregh, the media outlet of Irans Revolutionary Guards, confirmed that the Islamic regime not only has weapons of mass destruction but has armed its terrorist proxies with them, including Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad. The commentary warned Israel that if the fighting in Syria does not stop, an all-out attack on the Jewish state will be launched and that at zero hour, Tel Aviv will be the first city to be destroyed.
I know you are correct about the Russian population. It makes sense that they maximize their arms sales. I haven’t heard about what happened to Assad’s rebuilt helicopters that were turned back.
I don’t see anything good for Russia in the future.
Hours after NATO agreed on Tuesday to send Patriot missiles to Turkey because of the crisis in Syria, Russia delivered its first shipment of Iskander missiles to Syria.IOW, the Patriot missiles were delivered on short notice in order to preempt the impending (and long-delayed) delivery of these Russian offensive weapons.
