It's a contest of wills and guess who is winning? President Obama, of course. And that's because the president is up against the GOP's equivalent of Churchill's "Boneless Wonder," Speaker John Boehner. Matched against the president, Boehner is making Ned Beatty's hapless character from the classic movie Deliverance look downright gritty.
Boehner the Boneless Wonder's beta dog routine is doing much to deep-six the Party of Lincoln. Hyperbole? Don't grumpy grassroots conservatives grouse incessantly that establishment Republicans are screwing the -- well, putting it more politely, screwing it up and that the Grand Old Party will go the way of the pterodactyl?
For the insulated tin-eared prowlers of the halls of Congress (Boehner being chief), hear this: The times, they have a-changed -- radically so. The context is dramatically different today than America before the Hugo Chavez-in-chief wanna-be in the White House, the august and empurpled Barack Hussein Obama, took the nation's reins ("On Dancer, on Comet, on Boehner!)
As of this writing, there's been no stout opposition -- no bold proclamation of principles, no declaration of a fight for limited government and liberty -- from the speaker in the teeth of the president's insistence to tax the lights out of "rich" Americans (and, shhh!, every other working American, too, eventually). Boehner and his lackey GOP colleagues remind the history-minded of the French in the face of the Nazi blitzkrieg: throw up those white flags before the speaker's perfect hair is mussed.

boner and his ilk just can’t wait for the next party invitation or golf-outing invitation so they can drink and socialize with their “betters”. They will do anything for those invitations so that they can rub shoulders with their “betters”. Pathetic low self-esteem.
“You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go”
Truer words have never been spoken about this A-hole.
There aren’t any like that in DC.
NEW PARTY!!!
I wouldn't mind them going to some cocktail party, rub shoulders, find out what the opposition is up to, what they want, THEN DOUBLE CROSS THEM.
There is no such thing as FAIR play in politics today. I doubt it ever was.
That’s what we need! A conservative New Model Army. Works for me.
Come on John, “squeal like a pig”...
Well, you certainly aren’t talking about Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy (or McConnell in Senate either).
WRT the speaker position, you could be talking about Newt Gingrich! He showed how it should be done in the debates this spring.
Yes, he did get handled to some extent by Clinton back in the day, but he—unlike the others—appears able to learn and has done so.
Our “leadership” is to Obama what Lewinski was to Clinton. Or maybe they’re just all on the same team after all.
Let the democrats pass their plan. Vote “present” all of you... and let them own it. Our Federal Gov’t is like a drug user surrounded by enablers. Show some tough love and let the whole thing crash and burn...and hit bottom...Then put the country into an in patient rehab...over seen by conservative principles. It’s the ONLY way to turn this sinking ship around.
Anyone hear think this is just a temporary bump, is kidding themselves. This is just the beginning. None of us born and raised in this country has seen what we’re about to see. Let it hit bottom, expose this president for whom he is and what he stands for. IF in the end his ideas and plans work, then great...but if not we change course. I’m tired of the pass he’s got for the first four years, putting the blame on Bush etc. This is my main argument with Boehner.
He is an obama man
We need new leadership to progress from here. We’re the party of opportunity and Boehner doesn’t represent that. He’s surrendered entirely to the tax and spend gimme culture.
Your suggestions as to who that might be?
I’m hoping Jim DeMint will become much more outspoken once he leaves the Senate for Heritage.
To use the quote attributed to Churchill regarding David Lloyd George:
“The happy warrior of Squandermania.”
Perfect for Boehner.
For those who don’t remember: phony ethics charges were brought against Gingrich by the Democrats and squish Republicans kind of like the Dems bring false charges against Republicans right before an election and don’t even say “sorry” when the charges just evaporate after the targeted Republican has lost.
Sadly, there were a lot of ambitious Republicans who didn’t like Gingrich or his style or maybe his effectiveness. A cabal was formed that included BOEHNER, Dick Armey, Tom Delay, and Bill Paxon.
From Wiki: In the summer of 1997 several House Republicans, who saw Newt Gingrich’s public image as a liability, attempted to replace him as Speaker. The challenge began July 9 with a meeting between Republican conference chairman John Boehner of Ohio and Republican leadership chairman Paxon. According to their plan, House Majority Leader Dick Armey, House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, Boehner and Paxon were to present Gingrich with an ultimatum: resign, or be voted out. However, Armey balked at the proposal to make Paxon the new Speaker, and told his chief of staff to warn Gingrich about the coup.[1][2]
All four of the cabal were on a conference call with Gingrich where they were urging Gingrich to hurry up with a statement about the ethics charges. See http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/politics/jan-june97/cellular_01-14.html for a thorough rundown on the conference call (including PBS’s usual attempts to shut down the Republican).
The link above makes it clear IMO that the Democrat activists AKA innocent, ordinary citizens who recorded the conversation, having “accidentally” picked it up with a scanner while riding in their car, were in on a set up. Their scanner could pick up car or cellular phones but not land lines and BOEHNER just happened to be on his car phone within a mile of them.
Gingrich did make mistakes. He issued this statement: “With deep sadness, I agree. I did not seek legal counsel when I should have in order to ensure clear compliance with all applicable laws, and that was wrong, Gingrich said. Because I did not, I brought down on the peoples house a controversy which could weaken the faith people have in their government.”
OTOH the IRS, the FEC and a federal judge found that the tax exempt status of the course Gingrich taught did NOT violate tax law. IOW there was nothing wrong in his teaching the class or in the tax exemptions which were the whole of the phony ethics accusation.
THE WHOLE UNETHICAL CONDUCT CHARGE WAS BASED ON THE FACT THAT GINGRICH HAD NOT CONSULTED A TAX LAWYER FIRST. He paid $300,000 dollars because he hadn’t gotten a lawyer even though he obviously hadn’t needed one!
IMO this accusation is on a par with the Republican “war on women”. IOW bullshit. The $300,000 was not a fine, it was repayment for the expenses of the committee making this fabricated attack. But yes, TomGuy you are right that Republicans joined in with the Democrats in making it.
For the record, I don’t like a lot of things Gingrich has done (Scuzzyfava, Pelosi on the couch, zipper problems etc.), but he did more to turn this country back to our founding principles than anyone but Reagan.
He was intimidated after all this and somewhat neutered. However, in the primaries this year it looked to me like the old, effective, aggressive and bold Newt was back. What a thunderbolt of justice it would be if he replaced John Lewinski Boehner!
