LANSING (CBS Detroit) - It would no doubt be controversial, but the idea of dissolving the fiscally struggling city of Detroit and absorbing it into Wayne County is being tossed around in Lansing.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports some state Republicans are talking about giving the city the option to vote itself into bankruptcy. And mid-Michigan Senator Rick Jones said all options should be considered — including dissolving the city.
“If we have to, that is one idea we have to look at. We really have to look at everything that is on the table,” Jones said. “Again, if this goes to federal bankruptcy, every employee down there will suffer, the city will suffer and the vultures will come in and take the jewels of Detroit and they will be gone.”
Local consultant Tom Watkins has proposed this in the past, but the idea has never played well among Detroiters.

Detroit simply cannot exist as it is and pampering the place because it used to be an important city is just dissolving into farce. So what if it wont be the largest city in Michigan anymore. Some loss of pride is far better than loss altogether.
Divide it up and give the parts a chance to survive.

State Senator Rick Jones may be on to something. A few years back, I read that Memphis dissolved their their charter. I think it had to do with debts run up before, during and after the unCivil War. I don’t remember to much about it, but it came to mind reading this.
But, but Government Motors was saved from extinction in Detroit - - - ?

Surely the Government Regulators will regulate against Detroit being in debt to deep to fail?
Rumor has it that right after Obama’s Hawaiian Golf Vacation he will come to Detroit and give a speech, or something like it. It all depends on the Detroit temperature tolerance of Obama’s teleprompter.
Tje state people would merely be rearranging Detroit’s face and calling it by another name. The same type of people would still be in charge.
I think Detroit is doing a good job of dissolving on its own.
if they are going to dissolve it, they ought to use a powerful enough acid to make sure it does not come back. I was there just a couple of months ago and a couple of weeks back as well. It has turned into a sewer. You do not want to take a wrong turn. Sickening.
