Madison civil rights panel looks at making homelessness a protected class

Should homelessness be a protected trait — like sex, race, age and many others — in the city of Madison? The city’s advisory Equal Opportunities Commission is beginning to look into adding homelessness to the list of characteristics which may not be considered in housing, employment and public accommodation under Madison’s Equal Opportunities Ordinance. Interest in exploring whether homeless people should be designated a protected class to ensure their civil rights goes back to a controversy early this year about efforts to dissuade the homeless from hanging out in the lobby of the City-County Building, committee Chairman Brian Benford told me.

So... attempting to raise them out of homelessness is to be a hate crime?

not all of us....conservatives (and particularly outspoken conservatives) will be in the locked up (or dead) class....hardly protected by the government at all.

Homeless - just the liberal name for hobo’s, bums, etc. They couldn’t do anything about that so they just gave them a pretty name. They’re not homeless. Everybody has a home. You just need a house (or cardboard box) to put it in. I’d like them to name one, just one liberal volunteer group that helps them as “The Gospel Mission” or “The Salvation Army” ... where’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s “House Of Soup And Nuts”? or places like that. You’d be hard pressed to find a liberal soup kitchen. All Libtards can do is go spend a night on a heated subway grill then go and have a steak dinner to show how in touch they are with them.

If you want to be practical about it, there is a big problem with homeless people being unable to integrate because of some administrative “catch-22” problems, that could fairly easily and cheaply be overcome.

For example, a big problem for homeless people is that they cannot get ID unless they *have* ID. Oddly enough, for some, arrest records that prove identity, paid for by the police, can help people without ID get ID. But in many cities, police are now charging a hefty fee, like $25, to confirm identity.

Another example is that even if you have cash in hand for rent and deposits, you cannot rent an apartment unless you have a current address. Some cities allow people to use “General Post Office, attn: (a particular homeless person)” as an acceptable current address. A similar problem applies to employment, not being able to get a job unless you already have a job.

But cities could address both of these situations in a “quid pro quo”, that the homeless person provides a current photo, fingerprints, family contacts if any, in exchange for identification and the ability to rent if they can afford to.

And truthfully, *if* just minimal employment is needed to get a job, a city could easily generate some real temp jobs, doing minimum wage labor, just to get the ball rolling. No big problem there, as the city would have paid for that labor anyway.

Yet all of this will only address part of the homeless problem, because many homeless are homeless because they *want* to be homeless. But reducing some of the homelessness does a lot to make the homeless less obnoxious.

Well, I don’t like these special “protected class” laws one bit. Still, it’s kind of funny, if you think about it. If we DID routinely discriminate against the homeless in housing, employment, and public accommodation, then we’d pretty much be ensuring they’d be perpetually homeless. What else can they do if they can’t get jobs, can’t rent a place to stay, or even get a hotel room? Seems like a really foolish way to deal with homeless people, if you view them as a nuisance.

If you changed it to:

“Hit me with a quarter! Only 25 cents.”

You could double your profits.

Yes, but you’d have nothing for the other 99% to occupy, so I think you’d be alright.
