(CNN) - Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum hinted Monday he may see another presidential run in his future.

"I'm open to that possibility," the Republican said when asked on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" about a 2016 White House bid.

"But we're a long way..." he added, pausing, then continuing, "I'm focused right now on trying to stay involved in the fray and make sure that we do the right thing up on Capitol Hill right now."

Santorum proved a tough opponent to Mitt Romney during the Republican presidential primary, ultimately forcing the contest to run as late as April when Santorum dropped his bid and paved the way for Romney to clinch the nomination.

Well, Santorum did a nice spoiler job on Romney, making sure he was broke throughout the summer and softened up for Obama.

Yes .Now if SOMEONE could talk her into running :

She could increase voter turnout and she breaks the liberal media matrix that says Republicans are all white men:

We have the lowest voter turnout of any nation in the U.S.A . A leader like Palin could turn out us Americans as we did in Louisiana at 70% in 2012. I haven't researched why U.S. voter turnout is so low but I ‘m guessing it's the media suppressing voter turnout especially conservative voter turnout by bashing our GOP candidates from the right ( yes the leftist media bashes us from the right to divide us and we let that happen). The media tried to destroy her and the liberals fear her but she is great and could turn out and unite real Americans.

An ex-senator, yep that’s the answer. /s

And one that couldn’t even win his home state.

No. No more losers, please. Why do the “second runner-ups” think they’re entitled to wait in the wings for their turn next time. Can we get a clean slate of candidates this time around?

I like his positions but

No charisma.

Sorry, but in the age of mass media you must have charisma.

I was for him, too, when things were looking favorably in the primaries, but he couldn’t go up against Letterman when he was on his show. His presentation was awkward and unflattering. The guy has no presence, no charisma. He would be awful, I’m sorry to say.

I’m ready to push for Sara again, too.

I have no problem with Santorum appearing in the 2016 field, although he will have to make the case that he’s a fiscal conservative, and learn how to answer the inevitable abortion/gay marriage/you-want-to-ban-contraception questions.

We know Marco Rubio will run. Jeb Bush might just run for practice. Who else is likely to be in the field? I think it might be a little early for Martinez (she only became a governor in 2011). ‘Probably a pipe dream, but I would love to see Allen West in a primary debate.

We know the opposing field will be: Fauxcahontis, Biden, Castro, Cuomo, O’Mally, and possibly the Mooch. Very weak.
