On this fowl thread, let's take a diversion to another chicken-related topic -- the Victorian influence in the names of chicken parts.

The Victorians were so prudish that not only could certain human body parts not be seen in public, they couldn't even be talked about in polite society. And this prohibition was carried over to chicken parts. Ergo, a "leg" was far too crude, and was referred to as a "drumstick." A "thigh" was out of the question; hence "second joint." And God forbid that "breast" be mentioned -- it was simply "white meat."
