CINCINNATI — One of Cincinnati’s largest employers fired approximately 150 employees Wednesday for failing to get a required flu shot.

TriHealth offered all of its 10,800 employees free flu shots. Employees had a month to get the flu shot. The deadline was Nov. 16. Employees who did not get the shot were terminated Wednesday, a company spokesperson said...

Want some cheese to go with that whine?

Heck, they should be happy the hospital doesn’t make it a day. They are already getting a bunch of other shots so you can’t tell me one more is a big deal.

The right thing is to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and not compromise your immune system, and NOT introduce toxins such as flu shots into your body....JMO....

The voice of reason.

BIL has doctorates in both pharmacology and Vet medicine. He firmed up our convictions about vaccines. This family does not do vaccines. 19 yrs and none of us has ever seen a Dr for an illness.

“Lawsuit in the making”

The problem is that the government has proclaimed the (unproven) fact that doctors and hospitals are most probably to blame if one of their patients gets flu, and that they will not be liable if only they achieve 100% immunization of employees.

Turn that fact over to the healthcare organization lawyers, and they will do the rest.

“Those who get flu shots are “taking one for the team”. Those who don’t are free riders.”

BS, if you take the shot, YOU get your immunity, right? And if one doesn’t take the shot, they only risk themselves and others who made the same decision.
So take the shot if you wish. You are free to mock me if i get a flu. My decision does not harm those who decide to get the shot. Why are you so determined to make us get the same shot you did? How does that benefit YOU?

No matter how much you types talk about “herd immunity”, it all comes down to the individual. If only 5 people in America got the miracle shot, they are protected. Anything beyond self protection is getting into a gray area.

Funny how the health worker community is usually pro-choice, that is until i decide not to get a shot.

“You got the flu from it?”

Not the day I got the shot, but within the next few months. By the way, if you press any of the liars you meet about this, they will then change their tune and say that the shot may not keep you from getting the flu, but that the flu you get will be ‘milder’ because you had the shot.

I always answer, “the flu I’ve gotten while not taking the shot has been even milder yet - none at all!”

I am absolutely convinced the flu shots are nothing more than a huge profit for the drug companies and have absolutely NO benefit to society.

No one is lying, nor is anyone "changing their tune" about the flu. The reality is that flu is an extremely complicated disease, and scientists are doing their best to try to combat it.

The major problem is that there are many different flu viruses, and the flu shot only protects against three of them. Newer flu shots protect against four. Furthermore, flu viruses are always mutating. Since it takes 6 months to make flu vaccine, the public health officials are forced to make educated guesses about which flus will be epidemic in the upcoming flu season. The vaccines are then manufactured to protect against those predicted flus. People in public health don't have crystal balls, so if a new flu pops up, the current vaccine can't protect against it.

It takes about 2 weeks for a vaccine to "kick in". So it is very possible to get the vaccine and come down with the flu a few days later. That doesn't mean the vaccine didn't work, or that it caused the flu: it means you were exposed before the vaccine had a chance to work.

If you get the flu after the vaccine has had a chance to "kick in", then the flu was not one of the three (or four) flus the vaccine was meant to protect you against. In that case, the flu may be much milder than it would have been without the vaccine. That's because of something called "cross-protection." If the flu virus you got was similar to the one in the vaccine, your immune system might still recognize it, just not very well. (Kind of like using a 6 mm wrench on a 4 mm bolt; it works, but not very well.) So instead of being bedridden for days, and maybe dying, you just feel bad for a few days while your immune system "fine-tunes" its response against the virus you actually got sick with.

This year's flu vaccine is made to protect against H1N1 pandemic flu, H3N2 seasonal, and flu B Yamagata. If you are exposed to any of those, you will not get sick, or your illness will be very mild. But if you are vaccinated and go to the fair and get exposed to pig flu H3N2v, you will get sick because the vaccine doesn't contain pig flu H3N2v.

Flu kills between 3,000 and 49,000 Americans every year, and over 200,000 are hospitalized. It is a HUGE health problem. In terms of "profits", those illnesses and deaths cost far more than the vaccines.

I know this is kind of long, but you raised issues that simply must be addressed. Please feel free to ask for clarifications or more information; I am a public health professional, it's my job to know this.

To add to this toxic brew of discussion, note that as far as drug companies go, manufacturing vaccines isn’t particularly high on their list of things they want to do. Profit margins aren’t very good, and the potential liability (from lawsuits, justified or not) is off the charts. It’s a shame that this has been allowed to occur.

A good primer on this is to research the history of the Polio epidemics that were once common in the US - the Salk and Sabin vaccines, initially had some problems - and in some cases iirc from my reading of history, recipients contracted Polio who were otherwise healthy.

The wind up to all this, it’s doubtful a Polio vaccine introduced now would pass muster these days? I dunno.

TSA cares about your safety.

EPA cares about the environment.

CDC cares about your health.

Just keep repeating that. CDC is also really big on the gun ban bandwagon.

Have you taken their suggestions wrt that?

I work with hospitals every single day. Every single one of them has to get shots.

heck I’m just a vendor and narrowly avoid having to get the shots.

A doctor friend tells me that they are absolutely ineffective if taken after the flu season breaks out, that odds are you’ve been exposed in one way or another, so taking them late is a waste of time and money.

That's not quite true. It's best to get the shot before flu season hits, but it's still worthwhile to get one even during flu season. The chance of getting exposed during the time between getting the shot and becoming immune is, of course, higher if you wait until flu season to get the shot.

I've never, to my knowledge, had the flu. I do get a shot every year. People who have had the flu tell me it's miserable.

There IS a religious exemption in Red Hampshire (and other states, I believe), but it has to be one of the 'state approved' religions. It is good to know that this state is blessed with HR personnel who are able to judge the status of an individual's relationship with Jesus Christ.

That was obvious from the get-go. Too bad about the folks damaged by flu shots. Guess you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

"I do D3 also but experimental evidence of D supplementation conferring influenza immunity is really sketchy. Difficult to replicate, etc. But taking it during the winter in cloudy, higher latitude areas would seem to make sense on general principles."

D3 helps with things other than flu. I have BAD allergies, and as a result, any additional immune system attack tends to "get a running start". For YEARS (maybe 15), I would have four or five BAD colds (not flu), with subsequent sinus infections, antibiotics, and the whole nine yards EVERY YEAR.

I had been slowly ramping up my D3 intake working with my doctor and having blood tests. Was still having colds. Then (unknown to me) my wife switched to a higher dose D3 caplet (2X the previous dose), which jumped me from 5000 IU to 10000. Haven't had a cold since (about two years now).

Admittedly anecdotal data, but I can assure you that "I" am convinced.

I don’t provide patient care so I doubt it.

I’d just quit going to the hospitals and require it of my employees.

Nice. You will make your employees get something you yourself aren’t willing to get? Nice boss.

Yes, you are next. Vendors at local hospital have been told they will be required to get it next year. They’re also mumbling about requiring pneumonia, shingles and meningitis vaxs of everyone as well. TDaP has been discussed too. Your employees might be getting five vaccines.

Here in FL we just went to the health Dept and got a “philosophical” exemption for the kids. Had to fill out a little form that we were aware of the “horrors” of not vaccinating but it was basically in and out.
