(CNSNews.com) - The Thanksgiving holiday comes with a series of advisories and admonitions from your favorite Uncle Sam:
The Transportation Department wants you to "buckle up and slow down," especially on Sunday; the Food and Drug Administration wants you to store your medications safely when traveling; the surgeon-general wants you to "create a family health portrait" when you sit down to your turkey dinner with relatives; and the U.S. Agriculture Department wants you to "sample local businesses" when you start your holiday shopping.
Aside from the by-now-familiar tips on safe food handling and turkey cooking times (found at the USA.gov website), the advice is flowing freely from the the U.S. government this Thanksgiving.
Here's a sample:
The U.S. Transportation Department has declared Nov. 25 to be "Drive Safer Sunday." DOT Secretary Ray LaHood says on Sunday, after a few days relaxing with family and friends, "tens of millions of people will be rushing home to prepare for another work week." He notes that the Sunday following Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year on the nation's highways: "That's why DOT is once again recognizing Driver Safety Sunday by reminding all motorists to buckle up and slow down -- particularly on this high volume day."
Surgeon-General Regina Benjamin has declared Thanksgiving to be the nation's ninth annual Family Health History Day: "An important step in prevention and wellnes is learning about health conditions in our families that may put us at increased risk for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, Alzheimers disease, mental illness and many others, Benjamin says. She wants us to track illnesses from one generation to the next so health care providers can predict what may befall each of us.
Benjamin suggests that we "prepare for a Thanksgiving Day family conversation" by making a list of relatives, including parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and cousins.
On this Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you and your family will take a few minutes to create a family health portrait, Benjamin said. Learning your familys health history can be an enjoyable way to invest in the future of your health and your familys health.
The FDA says those of us who are traveling over the holiday weekend should make medication storage an "important consideration," right up there with "where youre going to stay and what youre going to do."
In a blog post, the FDA offers six tips for safely storing medication, including this one: Remember never to leave medicine or vitamins out on a table, countertop, bedside table or anywhere your children could reach them." And this one: "While staying in a hotel, secure your medicines and vitamins in a location that your children cannot see or reach, such as a high cabinet or passcode-protected hotel room safe.
The USDA is touting Small Business Saturday by urging everyone to shop at small businesses whenever possible: "On Saturday, November 24, 2012, "please take time to thank the small business owners in your community for their contributions to the local economy by purchasing their products and services."
And if you find yourself stymied while shopping at one of those small businesses, you can always log onto USA.gov, where you will find "seven smart shopping tips for Black Friday."
You know, once the feds can tell us that we have to buy health insurance, the next thing you know is they will be telling us how to think.
>> The Obama government: one giant PSA in your life.
I’ll take the PSA over the legislative iron fist any day.
If the Obamas were my parents, I would want to be emancipated and live at the Y.
I notice all the government PSA commercials on the radio these days too. Weird. ANd what McDonalds commercial?
I'm starting to view it more like a red-headed stepchild.
From someone else's family.
Recently released from prison.
For child molestation.
Unwilling to work.
I have an unfavorable view of it.
and I am not doing your HIV test either...
When do you getour very own pics of our “Beloved Leader Obama”?
BTW...in honor of our Muslim Pres...we had pork chops for Thanksgiving. Yum Yum.
Its simply amazing that there are so many people around who are over 65 years of age. How we ever managed to live so long without the government telling us what to do and how to live is simply amazing.

Yep! Grew up in Dallas with lead paint inside and asbestos siding outside the house. Had frequent DDT fogging of the area. No helmets when riding bikes or roller skating. No seat belts in autos and kids riding in the beds of pick up trucks. How did we survive without the nanny state? 70y/o
I have never heard or seen as many govt ads, from all agencies and departments. It is creepy.
The other thing Obama does - he appropriates holidays or anniversaries for his own goals - even September 11th.
“I have noticed a real increase of PSAs on talk radio”
They can’t sell advertising. I don?t understand why they don’t lower their rates.

Don’t know where you live, but in the DC metro area WMAL is carrying these so called PSAs during prime times and they don’t seem to have any problems selling ad spots.
It may well be that the PSA label allows for reduced rates. I’d love to find the total amount of $$ being spent by the Feds and states on this propaganda.
One of the more bizarre and obnoxious ones addresses the need for native american folk to insure their kids exercise more. A talking bicycle. If there is any NA population at all in the broadcast area it is minuscule, yet these run throughout the day and night.
Years ago a show biz person told me that the voice over work allowed actors to get the minimum hours in maintain their AFTRA union cards.
It’s the propaganda arm of the DemPartei.
First it is a reminder, then a kindly sugeestion, then..................we are the frogs in a pot on a low flame
Boy, isn’t that the truth? Now that’s what I want to “discuss” at our family get-togethers but some just refuse to recognize it.

I have to listen to Rush over my smartphone. Lately some of the stations have been having the most obnoxious PSAs. I wondered if it was a form of persecution for being a conservative.
“...in the DC metro area WMAL is carrying these so called PSAs during prime time”
I used to wake up to Hardin & Weaver on WMAL. Rode home from school on D.C. Transit. The overhead ads plugged LBJ’s youth fitness program, “If you can do more pushups than your ten year old son, he’s in trouble.”
The PSAs have spiked under Zero, so something nefarious is going on. Your explanation makes sense.
Every time I hear one, I want to put my fist through the radio.
It’s the silver-tongued, velvet hammer of soft oppression. And it works on comatose Americans.
They already do, but you don't actually have to listen.
