There are already 8 million Americans working part time who want to work full time. It seems likely that number will skyrocket once Obamacare is implemented.
An Obamacare supporter is as stupid as the Democrats who passed the legislation in the first place:
********
When my better half told me that her boss was thinking about cutting all full-time employees to part time in order to avoid the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act insurance requirements (for full-time employees), my initial response was, "Surely the federal government wouldn't have allowed such a blatantly obvious way of getting out of the requirement." But that turned out to be false.
In fact, major names in the service/hospitality industry (e.g., Denny's, Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Longhorn Steakhouse) are already in the process of going to a part-time employee schedule for all employees. Thus, as a very possible consequence of the short-sightedness of the Affordable Care Act legislators, more people will be working two jobs to make ends meet.
Yet acquiring a second part-time job may be an impossibility for a large number of service/hospitality employees. Most part-time employees in this industry do not work full eight-hour shifts in a day. Rather, they work five to six days a week for four to six hours at a time during the busiest hours. Thus, it may not be possible for part-time workers to work more than one job, because the days they will be available to work will have been constrained by the part-time job they are trying to supplement.
The problems, however, may not end there. Because more people will be forced into part-time positions and into working multiple jobs, then less people will have the time to go to college, have benefits like vacation and sick days,

If it’s good enough for europe, it’s good enough - or better - for us.

Donchaknow that it is rude to confuse people with facts?
If 3 people go to 30 hour weeks and a 4th is hired to take up the slack, it’s pretty good for that 4th one.
And Obama will get NONE of the blame. The Dem's and their media toadies will put all the blame on greedy Republican business owners.
Only if companies fundamentally change their operating structures. The IRS is very quick to look at all 1099 type firms, and if they smell one whiff of a W2 employee hiding under a 1099, the financial ramifications cost cause the company to close it's door.
If the company is in any way, shape or form, close to the 50 employee thresh hold, best bet would be to reduce employees to around 40, and then leave them there until, hopefully, we get a reset.
Employers under 50, are currently exempt from the fines and taxes, but we're grandfathered in to our old plans and have no way to switch to new plans that might be better because of the new structure.
I spent the days after the election trying to explain to the employees in our company what was going to happen, what the mandate meant to them, and why we probably would never grow our company beyond 40 people or so.
Better safe than sorry with the government looking back at the last 12 months to see how many eligible employees you have to see if you qualify for penalties. This is why people are laying off and reducing work now, because come 1/1/14 and the government does the 12 month lookback, no one wants to be more than 49 eligible employees!

Get used to this and other degradations, America.
Remember when we conservatives warned you about the ramifications of the Obamacare monstrosity. Remember.. how we said Obamacare was but one of the items on Obama`s destroy-America agenda, and you ignored us at best and at worst accused us of racism? Remember how we warned you unemployment was going to skyrocket? Remember how you voted on (and in some cases before) 6 Nov?
Well, you stupid, ignorant, self-absorbed, sh*t-for-brains sheep who voted for Obama or sat on your lazy asses and didn`t vote at all... elections have consequences.
Take a look at your situation, America... what you see is the best it`ll ever be. It`s all downhill from here.
The author forgot something. The goal of this strategy is for the companies to avoid paying for the health care of their employees. Yet having health insurance is now mandatory. So, an employee who now has to work two 29 hour jobs (58 hours), not only has less free time, but is now required to pay for health care that they didn't have last year. So quite a bit of the extra money coming in from the extra 18 hours per week will be spent on coercive health care. It is an extra 18 hours to tread water for the most part.
And for all the mess this will cause, the real effect is coming in a couple of years, as companies with large numbers of minimum wage employees decide to automate their way out of the problem, and getting rid of as many jobs as they can. The "job boom" in part time work is a temporary bubble. In ten years, the jobs won't be there at all, if they can be automated.
I think O welcomes part time workers. ‘Work is bad,’ after all. And surely the Holy Government can pick up the slack, making folks ever more dependent. What’s not to like?
There’s no job in a restaurant which can be legally 1099’d besides the piano player in the lounge. Restaurants can use staffing firms but then the staffing firm will have to W2 the personnel, and you’re back where you started, unless the Obamacare bureaucracy will let you break up your personnel into a string of 49-employee-max staffing firms ... which somehow I doubt.
Me too! I’m also 58 and would love to retire and work part-time. I’m tired of working 84 hours a week. Everything I have is paid for, including the farm, and I don’t need to make as much as I do. I will have a greatly reduced retirement healthcare rate from my employer, a pension, my 401K and profit sharing. I have stock in Kraft, Duracell, Gillette and Proctor & Gamble. I think I can make it.
I would think there are a lot of paths to take. McDonald's has already tested the technology of outsourcing their drive through order takers to India. If a fast food restaurant redesigns their space to a drive in like Sonic, where people eat in their cars, it will remove the labor involved in keeping their seating areas clean. Many restaurants have moved their drink machines out to the customer areas because the labor involved in getting a drink is more expensive than the drink itself, so they outsource to the customer to get their own drink.
Bit by bit, the labor can be removed from these companies.
“And Obama will get NONE of the blame. The Dem’s and their media toadies will put all the blame on greedy Republican business owners.”
And the bad healthcare will be blamed on the doctors.
“Obamacare will make us a part time nation”
Well, why not? Conservatives and patriots only control 30 states, and that’s up from 25 in 2010.
Let’s not organize, let’s not elect constitutional sheriffs, let’s not clean out the rats in our neighborhoods sitting on local village and county board seats.
That’s too much work. Let’s all get on our knees and be fitted for chains. We only control more than half the population of the US. That’s obviously not enough to take on two million fat pigs in the criminal fascist syndicate occupying Washington who can’t shot, can’t man a battlefield and will run at the first hint of trouble.
F***, we’re doomed.
What about those self service cafeterias they had in the 50s? I think we are going to see a lot more automation with an eye towards eliminating checkout positions, and possibly robotic stocking. Just keep an armed guard at the odor to see that things don’t get out of hand.
Iirc McDonalds has the ability to automate every function in their restaurants. They have had it for years.
Democrats will simply outlaw part-time employment and mandate everybody has to work a minimum of 30 hours. Looking ahead a couple moves, what next?
Control of states doesn't mean much when the states are little more than provinces of the great federal empire.
It will have to involve punishing businesses and benefitting one of their voter bases.
