Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. will announce his resignation from Congress today in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, Jackson's brother Jonathan Jackson said.
He spoke to the Chicago Tribune by telephone.
The congressman could not be reached for confirmation. Boehner's office also could not be immediately reached.
Jackson, 47, a South Side Democrat, has been treated for bipolar depression and has been on a medical leave from Congress since June. He has been under investigation by federal authorities for alleged misuse of campaign dollars and also has faced a congressional ethics probe.
Although he did not wage a campaign, Jackson won re-election on Nov. 6 to another two-year term in the House by defeating a Republican and independent challenger. Under Illinois law, Gov. Pat Quinn, a fellow Democrat, would call a special election to fill Jacksons 2nd District congressional seat, which extends from Chicagos South Side to Kankakee.
He is the son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader, and the husband of Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, 7th.

I finally finished weaving my basket in the booby hatch
Sorry for double-posting same article. You posted first, I searched, but was not as quick as you ;)
How will Chicago ever find another Black manic depressant felon to fill his seat?
Too sick to stand trial or seriously mentally ill?
All liberals are seriously mentally ill.
With his resignation, Illinois’ super corrupt Governor will get to appoint someone worse.
Rep. J. Jackson Jr. will likely be viewed as relatively benign compared to whomever gets appointed to replace him.
However, I do acknowledge that I am ignorant of his record, so I may be talking idiocy.
He hasnt been to work in a year, why hasnt he been fired.
He could have raped and murdered 10 hookers, and he wouldn’t have been “fired.”
Since Congressman Jackson resigned, which Repubican should run, in the special election? I hope that John Arrington will run. I posted a wall-to-wall comment, on his facebook page, and I asked him to run. If you agree, please ask him to run. He’s a conservative who was a Harvey alderman. He ran for the U.S. Senate, in 2010, so he has high name recognition.
Seems like a nice guy. I met him at the DuPage County Fair.
He could have announced before the election. He should pay for the Special Election.
The libs will play the victim card no doubt...racist white America put too much pressure on him and blinded him with materialism.
Do I need to be the first to point out that our country would be way better off if every leftist office holder would check in for mental treatment and not show up for work?

I second Phil’s nomination. I have no hopes that he could actually win, but it will help him for a future run for a winnable race.
any reason his wife Sandi won’t run? unless she needs to stay home and care for her “sick” husband. ;)
The successor is obvious: Jesse, Sr., who is known to say “Up with Hope, Down with Dope” even if he doesn’t really mean it. He will thrill Chicago as his son has done.
There is no appointment to the House, but Chicago might try it to test the Constitution. People in Chicago are most needy.
That district would elect Robert Mugabe if he were on the ballot.
