Over at the Washington Times, Jim McElhatton has written a story about the exorbitant prices the federal government pays to memorialize cabinet members and other bureaucrats who do the people's work by commissioning paintings of themselves.
The Environmental Protection Agency spent nearly $40,000 on a portrait of Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, while a painting of Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley will cost $41,200, according to federal purchasing records. The price tag for a 3-by-4-foot oil portrait of Agriculture Department Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack: $22,500.
All told, the government has paid out at least $180,000 for official portraits since last year.

A BIG oil painting of the BIG EPA “chief”. That sounds weird.
"...we got off lucky, her portrait could fill the side of a semi"
Keep the painting, fire the Chief!
Rather than oil, the medium I prefer for these petty tyrants is a liberal application of tar followed by a few bucketloads of goose feathers.
Sell the painting on Ebay.
I am so sick of these people.
I am sure same happened under Republican administration. Just more examples how the Federale Gov’t is huge welfare program for the people working in it and the contractors like like this painter. Sure we need a Federal Gov’t but half of the Federales could be fired and it would function more efficiently. There is no doubt that some Federale agencies are affirmative action hiring halls....the Dept of Education and the EEOC are just for starters.
IOW the Federale Gov’t exists to benefit its employees. This is its primary mission. And its “workers” skew heavily liberal, gay, minority, female and liberal. The Department of Defense and our military would be an exception
Destined to be found in a storage locker on a reality show fifty years from now and appraised at four dollars and sixty-eight cents.
And it skews heavily “stupid”.
Where will they hang all the portraits when the EPA is eliminated?
I guess $41k is what it takes to get somebody to look at butt-ugly Lisa Jackson long enough to paint it?
“In the end, the portrait will be un-hung, and the man will be hung”
Quote from the movie “Valkyrie”
We can only hope......
Take a f@#$%^& digital picture and send it to Costco or Sam’s $40. Our gov’t just does not get fiscal responsibility. When I read crap like this I want to start living like they do - go into debt, then add more debt, then force the bank to write it off (Bailouts), then go rack up more debt. What do I have to lose?
Lisa Jackson -— Can you say P I G pig! Left to her own devices she will ruin the private sector. Those who actually do useful work and are forced to pay the taxes so she can stuff her face with 10 pork chops a day.
It skews heavily lardass
It skews heavily porn surfing half the day because he/she has nothing to do but collect a paycheck signed by Timothy Guithner
I am the type of human being who would be horrified and embarrassed to have so much govt money spent on a portrait of me
especially when my agency was in the business of putting so many taxpayers out of work
Until we get decent honorable people with a sense of moral decency in govt, we are doomed
In post offices, on light posts next to the pictured...
Of course it cost $40k. Do you have any idea how many countless manhours had to go into trying to make this painting look good??
I guess $41k is what it takes to get somebody to look at butt-ugly Lisa Jackson long enough to paint it?
