Iowa scientists: Drought a sign of climate change

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — This year's drought is consistent with predictions that global climate change would bring about weather extremes including more frequent droughts, said a report released Monday.

The Iowa Climate Statement updates the 2010 report, reflecting the year's lingering drought and the belief that it signifies what many scientists have predicted — increasing instability in weather patterns will lead to extremes during both wet and dry years.

...

The report was signed by 138 scientists and researchers from 27 Iowa colleges and universities. They said they wanted to release the updated report now while the drought is still fresh in the public's mind.

"The drought is sort of a teachable moment," said Jerry Schnoor, co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research at the University of Iowa.

The scientists are careful to avoid saying any single extreme weather incident is directly caused by global warming, saying too many factors are at play when it comes to weather. But, they did say increasingly volatile weather patterns have been predicted by scientists who study global warming.

Droughts go into the average.

Of course, they also say that climate change equals more tropical storms, which drench the entire Eastern U.S. with rain when they come ashore.

These idiots have forever given up any legitimate claim to the title “scientist”.

Saw Ken Burns’ “Dust Bowl” last two nights. Now that was a drought. Plus poor farming techniques. Didn’t hear anything about climate change then, or global warming. Whenever there’s some sort of localized weather incident, here they come with that global warming/climate change nonsense.

Also, maybe those scientists should look at the rain we’ve been having here in Washington state.

Can they provide a list of weather conditions that would not be consistent with climate change? Perfectly average days, nights, and seasons? Has that ever occurred in the past at any time?

When every possible outcome proves your theory, you are have a flawed premise.

Of course. Global climate change is a fact. It's been happening for about 4 billion years.

If anyone thinks, reading this article, that mankind has ANYTHING to do with global climate change, then they are an idiot.

I apologize as a fellow Iowan who completely rejects this fiction. How the heck would they know? This is probably the same crowd who believes the earth is gazillions of years old so if they only have stats of the last 100 years of so, they have no clue why we had the drought.

What will they say when we get the next flood? Oh, yea, that's climate change, too. How convenient.

I thought drought was a sign of lack of rain.

No. Lack of rain is a sign of drought.

Trust me on this. Australians know how to recognise drought.

Althought we tend to attribute the droughts and flooding rains to El Niño and La Niña.

Global Warming/Climate Change causes extreme heat, cold, flooding, and drought. All weather is a sign of it and it's all caused by humanity. That means the only way to end it is human extinction. [/sarc]

Liberals are closest thing we have to Cylons.

Or maybe they wanted to release this information before the drought ended...

Then again they have a point - there's never been a drought before... I'm surprised we even have a word for such an event.

"The drought is sort of a teachable moment," said Jerry Schnoor

Uh, Jerr, being a drought, it's longer than a moment...maybe a "teachable few years."

Also, isn't it about time you finally quit using that banal, trite, and thoroughly worn-out bromide?
