During his stop in Burma earlier today, President Obama repeatedly mispronounced the name of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel laureate and former political prisoner who has led the struggle for a free and democratic Burma.,P.
From the Associated Press:
As Obama stood next to the worlds most recognized democracy icon, he mispronounced her name repeatedly.
Ever gracious, Suu Kyi did not correct her American guest for calling her Aung YAN Suu Kyi multiple times during his statement to reporters after their meeting.
Proper pronunciation for the Nobel laureates name is Ahng Sahn Soo Chee.
Whats more, Obama also botched the name of his official host, Burmas reformist new president, Thein Sein.

Not to brush anything off Obama, but there’s a lot of Asian names that are difficult to pronounce.

I’ve never understood this. I know they have things like protocol officers (or droids) who will set him up correctly. I think he might be believing his own press and might not think he needs them.
Which is how he ends up bowing and scraping to others and mispronouncing CORPsmen.

A lot of foreign names are mispronounced. When Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was president of Chile, I hardly ever heard his name pronounced correctly--Pea-Know-Chet--even by BBC newscasters, who usually get the names right. The same goes for Nikita Khrushchev, which is correctly pronounced khroosh-OAF.

"It's embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. Then we go over to Europe, and all we can say is
merci beaucoup"--Barack Obama.
Hear it from the horse's mouth.

I give him a pass on that.

It doesn’t translate well into his native language... whatever that might be.

It’s just that... if it had been Bush, it would be the headline of NYT. Jon Stewart, David Letterman, and SNL would base a week’s worth of jokes on it, and the entire entertainment and journalism industry would devote their LIVES to making sure every single person in the USA was aware of it, embarrassed by it, and will never forget it for as long as they live.
To: yoe
What else could explain his boorish and ungentlemanly behavior. This is done on purpose as a way to insult the human rights lady and bow to the evil Burma government.

You’d think on the trip over on AF-1 he would practice pronouncing his hosts’ names. But that would take work.
At least he did not call them corpse-men.

No, why waste time coming up with an excuse for the enemy?
Bush was expected to get names right, and was ridiculed if he didn’t.
It’s all about “fairness”, isn’t it?

OMG! I hadn’t seen that one before.
Never having heard or spoken the word “Orion” really shows Obama’s level of basic education and lack of intellectual curiosity. At least beyond what one needs to become a community organizer.
