Faculty at fourteen Pennsylvania state universities voted Friday to authorize a strike if contract negotiations fail to reach an agreement in coming weeks.
No one is on strike yet, but professors and coaches voted overwhelmingly that the union should be allowed to call one if progress is not made. Of the 6,000 ballots cast, 95 percent voted to authorize a walkout.

Of course professors need a union. How else can you protect low skilled easily replaced employees who make too much? Just look at the bakers for Hostess.
Son is graduating from IUP in several weeks, got one niece in Millersville, and one niece in Clarion.
I hope they don’t strike before son graduates.
No way. They should get rid of Tenure. First of all I work at the Naval Academy and they have to have Tenure within six years or they are fired immediately at the end of the 6th year. You could be the best Professor in the history of the school and it does not matter. So for six years, they have to get published, be on committees, and do a lot of research. It is a burden and should be thrown out. Professors should be able to just teach the students and not worry about doing other stuff that does not assist the students. There is too much pressure on Professors for such a small amount of money. However, after the sixth year, it is hard to get fired.
Lots of key Democrat Senate seats up in 2014. Obamas biggest nightmare is losing the Senate,
lol. For two elections, we have had more democrats up for reelection and the Republicans lost most of them. I doubt Obama worries about much.
As a prof I say this in jest: the students should pay them to stay out. Seriously I’m joking. Not.
Let ‘em strike. Send everyone home. State government against unions, a win-win fight for conservatives. Pass the popcorn!
“Of course professors need a union. How else can you protect low skilled easily replaced employees who make too much? Just look at the bakers for Hostess.”
Very true. As I remember, many reject faculty were hired and then when they were denied tenure, the unions would step in and sue the university and get tenure for them.
The philosophy department would only hire lesbians....
You can’t image the cluster *%#@.
Lock Haven University is known as one of the top four lesbian universities in the USA.
You bet. More common than you think.]
I am president of the faculty union at the college where it teach. Except for arts and science faculty, most of the fauclty are fairly conservative. Unfortunately, our union is part of the Maine Sate Employees Association which is part of the SEIU.
We just negoiated a contract that was considered to be a good one by all parties. I would not permit any left wing moonbatism from the MESA.
Yes of course we do! Conservative faculty members then have protection against left wing moonbats in the administration.
Shut it down! The question is, if you send your kid to college there will be no job for himor her in 4 years anyway so save your money and help shut down the government run taxpayer siphon, middleclass taxpaying, propaganda brainwashing machine. Put a liberal socialist commie out of work!
I remember when working for a state, having to sit through a new employee presentation from a union rep. I pitched the folder in the trash before I left the room. Glad you are holding the line, but really really wonder why anyone above the level of janitor needs to be in a union.
It is especially wrong, it seems to me, to want to “maximize salaries” on the backs of taxpayers. I also remember when I was on active duty constantly hearing the mantra about how they weren’t getting paid what their “civilian counterpart” was making. Today, what a laugh. The government employee is making great money and benefits, while the civilian workforce has been gutted.
Sanduskey State
Colleges are too expensive already. Colleges will be half empty soon.
IUP has a large gay and lesbian group too. They proudly march in the yearly homecoming parade. We usually leave town on homecoming weekend, even though I graduated from there.
I taught as a visiting assistant professor at one of the universities in that system for a year—I got paid about what I got at other temporary positions I had in those years, but the permanent faculty seemed to be paid quite a bit more than the faculty at comparable universities in other states. It was a four-course load (12 hours/week).
If the union is run by left wing moonbats, why would they protect you from left wing moonbat administrators?
