Police stationed along Texas border fight endless battle against drug trafficking and human smuggling:
NBC NATIONAL NEWS Brooks County, Texas is a less than five-hour drive from Houston, but the rural community of just over 7,200 people is facing an overwhelming amount of crime.
High-speed chases, smugglers and a rising body count has become a fact of life in a county made up largely of ranchers and farmers.
"We have a lot to contend with," said Brooks County Chief Deputy Urbino Martinez. "It takes a toll."
Houston's connection to this rise in crime can be clearly seen in the 250 cars kept in the sheriff's office's impound lot.
"There's criminal acts involving every vehicle that's here," said Martinez.
Martinez said 95 percent of the cars the county has seized this year as part of human, drug and weapons smuggling were originally stolen out of the Houston area.
"The connection between us and Houston, it's almost like you would have to say 'neighboring,'" said Martinez.
In addition to Martinez and Sheriff Rey Rodriguez, Brooks County has only four full-time patrol deputies and one investigator to cover 944 square miles of highway, back roads and ranch land.
Martinez said deputies have to work 12-hour shifts to keep up with all the crime running through the county.

Civil rights groups Nov. 1 staged a protest to decry the policy as part of a trend that has led to more than a dozen deaths of non-U.S. citizens as a result of border-area law enforcement

Fast forward...Brooks County averages two high-speed chases every day involving either drugs or human smuggling.
This year, the county is also contending with 60 missing person cases and 116 bodies of illegal immigrants found murdered or dead from exposure How very odd you do not see any protesters, no civil right groups, ACUL nowhere to be found,no Latin American Embassies demanding answers. Nobody from Team Obama demanding amswers on just how is it so many can freely leave Mexico without any encounters with law enforcement and what is Mexico doing to secure their side of the border.
I think Libertarians have the right idea. Give up a lot of this stupid drug war. Let people grow their own small amounts of pot, pay for a homegrown license. Let larger producers grow with bigger license and pay a tax. Stop criminalizing people for small amounts, and stop wasting vast amounts of our tax money on prisons and the courts.
I have done drug and alcohol counseling and been told by users of cocaine and heroin that if pot were easy to come by, that is what they would use.
Form it’s own nation and secure the border.
It will be the wealthiest nation in North and South America.
With the highest credit rating and set to explode in growth.
"Armed Drones"
Yeah, great idea. We should call you all surrender conservatives. It’s hard so let’s stop fighting it.
Houston is the Philadelphia of Texas, full of black and Hispanic crime, with an incompetent mayor and of of the police force.
Then they turn around and blame the crime on the Amish.
Have they no shame?

The war on drugs is stupid, just another way for gov to trample our constitutional rights.
“Pot” today is NOT what it was before....so say the police in our community....very amped up, sometimes with other “products” in it.
Throw open the borders, legalize all drugs and crime would end crow the libertines-libertarians.
You prefer sending billions of dollars yearly to the Mexican drug cartels?
“No Country For Old Men”
Well, that was set northwest of there but the story is the same.
It’s the drug users who send their money to the cartels. I don’t send them a dime. And I would prefer the drug users quit doing so.
This is actually one of the advantages of legalization. LEGAL pot would have to meet purity standards just like any other product for human use. But here in Washington, we are about to test the concept....state-level legalization having passed as a referendum in the late election.
(Note....I don't use pot or any other illegal drug, and never have. But the "War on Drugs" has been proven not only ineffective, but subversive of our liberties....it is time to try a different approach).
Four words...Military on the border.
We need a long skinny military base, the full length of the border. Then all the local LEOs would have to do is turn the perps in at the gate.
Bring back the troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt etc and send fully loaded B-somethings instead.
Just think of the manufacturing jobs that would create.
Nothing. Good "merchandise" usually outsells bad. And with a less than charitable attitude on my part, anyone who experiments with unknown drugs of unknown effects that croaks themselves has been of long-term benefit to the human race. As one SF author put it....."think of it as evolution in action...".
