Several former workers at a Hostess Brands plant in Rocky Mount said Friday they were relieved after the company filed for bankruptcy, seeking to close its operations.
The closings will mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs overall.
Theyve been holding this over our head for a long time and now its here, said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union. They had to do it.
I dont have to deal with that anymore. The things that they were trying to do to us, it wasnt fair.
They always hold that over our heads, that theyll close it down. So, Im like, OK. Close it down.
And on Friday, Hostess did. The flag at a Hostess plant in Rocky Mount hung at half staff on Friday afternoon, and many former workers there hung around outside to talk about what had happened.
Hostess had offered an 8 percent pay cut, but Phllips said that wasnt going to work for the employees.
Were not making a whole lot of money out here and then we got to take a pay cut like that. Then you got your health benefits going up, he said. They stopped paying into the pension fund.

Guess this dip hasn’t looked for other work recently. Wait until he applies for other jobs and the interviewer asks him how the common task of being an “oven operator” qualifies him for employment.
I thought the 99 week of UE thing was over?
This attitude is pretty common in Rocky Mount, particularly among Holder’s people.
You have to wonder.
Foodstamp alert!
5000 idiots cost another 13,000 people their jobs. Not to mention the jobs that will be lost in the surrounding communities.
None of these bakeries were in Texas, just the headquarters.
Apparently the government edge-you-kay-shun system in NC doesn’t teach that an 8% pay cut is better than a 100% pay cut.
My wife sees these folks at the Rocky Mount Wal-Mart all the time... using the EBT to buy better food than she’s buying with honest money, then taking it out to load it up in a better car than she’s driving...
That’s exactly what I was thinking! A total idiot!
He would rather sit at home watching cartoons and eating Twinkies than work anyway.
Now that’s all shot to hell.
Some people just can’t win.
How many people would have been thankful for those jobs and these fools act like they were put into slavery or something!
Cool. I’m with them: I don’t care, either. I don’t buy any of their products and never have. There are 2 retail outlets w/in 50 miles of me. But my state voted for Ds and so did the neighboring state w/an outlet.
Glad they achieved this victory. I wish them every similar success in the future.
Free Obama-iPads next. You watch
But a 50% pay cut on unemployment is worth it because Lamont and his ilk can sit on their asses and don't have to listen to the bosses tell him what will happen because of the union strike,
In the meantime, those who needed this job are now scared to death about losing everything. But, Lamont doesn't have to hear it anymore.
“oven operator”
From Simplyhired.com:
Every Bakery Oven Operator job on the web. 85 jobs available.
Good luck to the idiot in landing one of 85 positions available in the nation, all presumably at lower pay that he was making at union wages.
Which leads to a question that's plagued us for years...Is Wonder Bread really bread?
