Several former workers at a Hostess Brands plant in Rocky Mount said Friday they were relieved after the company filed for bankruptcy, seeking to close its operations.
The closings will mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs overall.
Theyve been holding this over our head for a long time and now its here, said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union. They had to do it.
I dont have to deal with that anymore. The things that they were trying to do to us, it wasnt fair.
They always hold that over our heads, that theyll close it down. So, Im like, OK. Close it down.
And on Friday, Hostess did. The flag at a Hostess plant in Rocky Mount hung at half staff on Friday afternoon, and many former workers there hung around outside to talk about what had happened.
Hostess had offered an 8 percent pay cut, but Phllips said that wasnt going to work for the employees.
Were not making a whole lot of money out here and then we got to take a pay cut like that. Then you got your health benefits going up, he said. They stopped paying into the pension fund.

I doubt that really is an “exhaustive list” especially for outfits that only market locally, like supermarket bakeries. Sites like monster.com may also have more.
Still, that’s definitely a smaller number than you’ll see on similar national boards for things like computer programmers and engineers.
“Paying the workforce is certainly a part of doing business. Paying ransom isnt.”
I just read that Hostess wouldn’t have any trouble selling their brands. So somebody seems to believe there’s a profit to be made. Free market.
I’ll agree with you on that when it comes to the baker union idiots.
The others that agreed to cuts or crossed the line to keep the company going should IMO get unemployment.
till he finds out from the welfare office he qualifies for Medicaid and food stamps.
Then there seems to be no problem here at all. If a profit isn’t being made under the current circumstances you find a way to change that. Free enterprise.
I think your right. I stopped buying their products when the cost of a pack of twinkies hit 3 bucks.
Get rid of the union overhead and I’d bet it’ll be about half that for a pack.
I've deleted so many "friends" from Face Book since the election. I can't deal with the crap any more.
I really gotta get me some of that shit.

I don’t eat them because they taste like hell lol.
Good luck finding a new job you idiots.
Who needs a job when you can get unemployment, section 8, healthcare, tuition, foodstamps and an Obamaphone... all for FREE.
Hmmmmmm...how so true, how so very true...

Right. Somebody else will take it over. The other snack cake companies seem to be doing fine.
Maybe Hostess was just poorly run.
There’s a supermarket here in New England called Shaws that is slowly going out of business because of union overhead. They have these big, beautiful stores, and they are all empty cause their prices are crazy.
Bless your heart Honey Child between my old job and my new one I took a 30% cut in hourly pay and a 40% cut in hours.
When you have done that get back to me about how a 8% is "not going to work for you."
The funny part is that this guy still has a job. And a darn well paying one too.

What’s taking their place.
SuperWalmart, SuperTarget, Market Basket & Whole Foods seems to be everywhere as of late.

I don’t know Market Basket. Wholefoods is expensive.
Not according to Glenn Beck
Market Basket is the best of the whole lot of them. They are in MA, NH & RI. Great prices. Just as cheap as SuperWalmart.
