Congressional leaders took a hard line on taxes ahead of a meeting Friday at the White House, with rank-and-file Republicans expressing opposition to a fiscal cliff deal that would bring in more revenue to the government.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said Republicans could accept new revenues, but not tax-rate hikes, as part of a broad deficit deal, but President Obama and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said it was unlikely that eliminating loopholes and capping deductions could raise enough revenue to gain their support.

Maybe they should just save us the drama and eventual humiliation when they cave in two months, and just cave in now and get it over with.
Utter BS.
Its like when your local government claims they will keep property tax rates from going up...but then increase assessments so you wind up with a tax increase while they can claim they held rates in check.
Boner hangs tough until Barry rubs some man-tan on him.
President Obama and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said it was unlikely that eliminating loopholes and capping deductions could raise enough revenue to gain their support.
This just tells us they are ONLY interested in THEIR
solution, not solving the problem.
“...but President Obama and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said it was unlikely that eliminating loopholes and capping deductions could raise enough revenue to gain their support”
This is complete and utter horsecrap! They aren’t interested in raising revenue! They want to raise taxes just to PUNISH people! The Dem party’s whole tax philosophy is “Let’s Get ‘Em!” It’s torches and pitchforks!
“Republicans say they will not back down”
Translation:
The Republicans will back down.
What bunch of crap. Bonehead doesn’t know what the word tough means.
Crybaby will act like he is holding out until the GOPe gets some little crumb they want and then it will be business as usual. Meaning, screw Americans.
I think the Republicans should cave and let the Democrats choke on the results over the next year.
Of all the issues facing the country, I don’t understand why Republicans are drawing the line on tax increases. They would pass amnesty in a heartbeat if they thought they could get away with it, and they have no apparent desire to stand firm on any of the social issues. Yet, they’re ready to fall on their swords to stop tax increases. Why is the Republican Party spineless on everything but taxes, especially when they can’t or won’t reform government spending in any significant way and cave on the debt limit?
These people are impossible to please. Boehner does the wrong thing, and they crucify him. He doe the right thing, and they react the same. I would never predict that Boehner will ultimately be heroic, but as long as he’s hanging tough, we need to support that. People do wise up and improve sometimes.
Except some freepers of course. They were apparenlty always perfect.
Because the party is run by the Rockefeller/Romney wing who agree with the Democrats on social and cultural issues. They’re the same liberals but they’re run by a different set of wealthy donors who insist they keep taxes low.
It seems no one has much faith in him. Anyone want to make a prediction on the date that he finally caves in?
if nothing is done taxes will be going up on everyone who pays them on Jan 1.
Right now he’s hanging tough but I understand the probability that he eventually caves.
