Hostess Brands said Wednesday that it will go into liquidation unless bakers striking in protest against a new contract imposed in bankruptcy court return to work by the end of the day Thursday.
"We simply do not have the financial resources to survive an ongoing national strike," Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn said in a statement.
The liquidation would result in Hostess' nearly 18,000 workers losing their jobs. The bakers' union represents around 5,000.
The union did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday, but has called the concessions demanded in the new contract "outrageous."
"Our members are on strike because they have had enough," bakers' union president Frank Hurt said in a statement Tuesday. "They are not willing to take draconian wage and benefit cuts on top of the significant concessions they made in 2004 and give up their pension so that the Wall Street vulture capitalists in control of this company can walk away with millions of dollars."

Buh bye. Don't let the heel of the loaf hit you in the ass...
So the Bakers could take out the Teamsters? Schadenfreude!
Oh, but wait, those Teamsters won't have it!
"The Teamsters Union on Thursday urged a separate bakers union to vote in secret on whether to return to work at plants owned by Irving-based Hostess Brands, which has threatened to liquidate if sufficient bakery workers dont agree to get back on the job by 4 p.m. today.Teamster Hostess members and all Hostess employees should know this is not an empty threat or a negotiating tactic (by Hostess), but the certain outcome if members of the (bakers union) continue to strike, the Teamsters said in a news release."
Twinkies will still exist
Some smart person will pick up the recipes, brands and equipment for pennies on the dollar. The union workers will all have been fired, or otherwise, the new owner will move production to another plant.
Is a bad deal for lawyers no more Twinkie defenses.
It’s after 4 Texas time. Have we heard anything, yet?
I’m gonna miss Hostess.
Apparently Jill Kelley was the hostess with the mostest.
Have to wait until tomorrow.
If GM did this in 87’ instead knuckling under to lifetime healthcare benefits after retirement, they wouldn’t have died a slow agonizing death, they would have been morta-bom in 2 weeks and risen from the dead, instead the UAW bled them dry like the Resturant in “Goodfellas”....
Ha ha you get what you vote for, imbeciles.
I can live without Ding Dongs but you’ll have to go grovelling to Baracka Claus for some of his stash.
Bring them to Texas.
I like Twinkies. Just wished this was Drake going down. I miss Ring Dings.
I agree - union bullies have had enough paychecks - enough donations given to democrats. Fire 'em. Who cares if Union goons have jobs... Obama will put them all on 'disability' and the country will go under sooner. Go for it.... it's time people woke up to the fact that choices have consequences.... Check out Europe - they're starting to 'get it'... Europe's elites lied to them, just like our elites are lying to us.
Haven't had a Twinkie for a long time though--maybe I'd better stock up. *
What sweet, sugary revenge to have so many union thugs lose their jobs.
They can keep there old slogan =
“THE EIGHT HOUR LOAF”
I want any spare Twinkies that are left over.
The price is right for Wonder Bread compared with three and four dollar bread products. I think I paid $1.35 for a small loaf at grocery store.
