RALEIGH, N.C. A possum drop that attracts thousands of people to a tiny town in western North Carolina each New Year's Eve may have had its last hurrah after a judge ruled Tuesday that a state agency didn't have the authority to issue a permit for the event.

I couldn’t imagine what a possum drop could be and was having visions of the WKRP’s turkey fiasco.
dropped the possum.
screwed the pooch.
jumped the shark.
Heh... not saying anymore about chickens, monkeys etc.
Screw the judge. Wear masks. Do it anyway.
"As God is my witness, I thought possums could fly."
I like that. Have the event and tell the judge and any LEOs trying to enforce it to “piss up a rope.”
So if there is no permit to be issued, do it and have a nice day.
He apparently has a license that allows him to kill a possum (take), but not to “keep” a live possum.
So, he could kill the possum, get it stuffed, and drop it, but he can’t keep it alive and let it go.
PETA won’t allow the latter, but can’t stop the former.
Probably according to Hoyle this falls into some banned category activity with wildlife, and there would have to be some explicit provision for judicial exceptions like this one that got smacked. You can probably legally shoot the possum, but you cannot ceremonially lower it in a box.
So revise the silly law to allow safely lowering opossums in boxes and be done.
I would prefer an attorney drop.
Way more plentiful then possums too.
There may be an over abundance of them in most cities.
Government is the definition of stupidity and it doesn’t matter if its federal or local.
Its legal for me to live trap coons and possums here at the house but I can’t kill them without a small game license and I can’t turn them loose in the state land without a permit.
One of these days I’m going to be sitting in a jail cell and someone is gonna ask me, “What are ya in for” and I’m going to say “Coon smugglin” and that’s when the fight is gonna to start.
I can't quite put my finger on what this story is about.
Happy Possum Day!

Obviously the judge does not understand animals very well.
I think the way around this is to get several hundred raccoons, and take them to the judge’s house in the wee hours of the morning, along with several hundred pounds of dry cat food on which they can feast.
perish the thought of anyone in the South capturing and using wild animals for pets or amusement
Well they may have to take the approach that Yellville, Arkansas was forced to employe after the gov’t decided to shut down their official “Turkey Drop” during the annaul Trukey Trot festival.

Turkey Trot has been celebrated on the second Friday and Saturday of October every year since 1946. It was conceived as a way to call attention to the region’s abundant wild turkeys. A highlight of the festival was the “Turkey Toss,” in which live wild turkeys were tossed off of the roof of the County Courthouse. In the 1960s this was replaced by the Turkey Drop.
The thinking behind the toss/drop was that most of the turkeys would escape into the wild and thereby increase the local population. The problem is that wild turkeys can’t fly very well. Some of the birds would splat on the pavement. Some that landed safely ended up being chased around town.
The splattering and the chasing drew unwelcome national media attention in the 1970s and 1980s, and animal rights groups threatened legal action. Since 1990, Yellville has officially divorced itself of the Turkey Drop — it isn’t mentioned in any Turkey Trot literature — and yet it still happens every year. The town’s position is that mysterious planes just show up over the festival every October and drop turkeys (although the drop point has been moved to the south edge of town so that the pilots don’t violate FAA altitude regulations). Four or five drops take place each day, with one to three turkeys per trip.

Drop it, THEN shoot it.
Problem solved.
