ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT — The FBI probe into the sex scandal that led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus has expanded to ensnare Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced early Tuesday.
According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” emails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall. Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.
The FBI first notified the Pentagon of its investigation into Allen’s communications with Kelley on Sunday evening, according to the senior defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the ongoing case.
In response, Pentagon chief Leon E. Panetta referred the investigation to the Defense Department’s Inspector General for further review, according to a statement released by Panetta early Tuesday as he was traveling to Australia.
The latest development in the unfolding scandal has shaken President Obama’s national-security staff and upended his carefully chosen plans for his military and intelligence team in his second term.
It also further calls into question the personal behavior of two of the U.S. military’s highest-ranking and most respected figures, who apparently ignored concerns about the highly sensitive nature of their jobs as they embraced personal relationships with younger women who were not their wives.

In his statement, Panetta said Allen would remain as commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan for now, “while the matter is under investigation and before the facts are determined.”

This certainly has to be demoralizing for the front line troops. But these events do demonstrate one truth: that personal morality does matter. I think at one time the military leaders were honourable men who took seriously their oath to protect the country, but who became part of the compromising culture of Washington. In order to get ahead they started to compromise their principles and are now at the point where they put the interests of their country and the safety of their men behind social climbing and satisfying their narcissistic impulses. Remember, these are the same men who cheerlead for politicians who inserted female soldiers into combat positions (then shielded those women from the really dangerous assignments) and are now promoting homosexuality in the armed forces. They know that permitting these atrocities is damaging to America’s safety but their first priority is their own privileged place in the Washington establishment.

Yes, so much for “situational awareness” the military professes.
That is quite a rant, but first, remember that the guys who got us into a hot shooting war in the ME thinking we were going to clean up the whole place was Bush and his neo-con's. Those were the guys who are the real target of this rant. Petraeus, if you will recall, was the guy who snatched some sort of reasonable outcome out of the jaws of defeat that Cheney and Wolfowitz and that crowd got us into in Iraq.
Petraeus is not coming off as a saint here, but anyone who is looking for saints in effective combat generals (Patton anyone) needs to find and alternative universe. The drive that makes men good at killing things that need killing also make them good at other basic human drives. It is how we are wired up, part of the human condition. Don't want pansies running your combat troops, well conservatives need to look in a mirror and decide what things they want in military leaders and what things they can live with.
Want your version of PC, ok, you can have it, but you are going to get a McClelland and not a Grant.

I guess it comes as some small relief that the generals are chasing skirts and not boys.

What I found odd was his statement in his resignation admitting to the affair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a high ranking official putting it that way before.
How could two busy generals write 10’s of thousands of emails?????? That just does NOT compute.
I'm almost betting the same thing. Note that at first they were supposedly alluding to Petraeus/Kelly relationship but now we find out that they may have really been alluding to Allen/Kelly relationship.

Not saying the affair didn’t happen but the outing and e-mails read like a dime-store novel.

Wait. Is there a way they can blame Bush? We all know that noone will point the finger at a democrat commander in chief.
I think the there is a teachable moment here. Don’t send threatening emails to a woman who is screwing half the top military and CIA brass. It won’t end well.
If I was any of these folks I would be running to the GOP controlled committee and requesting witness protection until I could testify and then spill the beans. These folks have to realize that their lives are in serious jeopardy, given that the entire administration could come tumbling down. Yes, the MSM will do what it can to stonewall, but if Petraeus or someone else testifies that Obama pulled rank in order to leave the Americans in Benghazi stranded, the MSM will be forced to report those revelations.
It is just about sex. Why is the media even reporting on this?
