Petraeus hoped affair would stay secret and he could keep his job as CIA director

CIA Director David H. Petraeus did not intend to resign from his position until it became clear that his extramarital affair with his biographer would become public after a federal investigation of his e-mail accounts, according to two longtime military aides who admire the retired general.

“Obviously, he knew about the relationship for months, he knew about the affair, he was in it, so yes, he was not going to resign,” said Peter Mansoor, a retired Army colonel and Petraeus’s executive officer during the Iraq “surge,” who spoke Monday with the former general for about half an hour. “But once he knew it was going to go public, he thought that resigning was the right thing to do. There is no way it would have remained private.”

Steven Boylan, who served as Petraeus’s public affairs officer during that same 2007-2008 period in Iraq, said the retired four-star general “felt he had to [resign] once he knew it would be made public. He didn’t feel he could lead the organization with this being out there.”

"There is no way it would have remained private."

Perhaps once Eric Cantor got wind of it the Obama team's plan to hide it or keep it for current or future blackmail fell apart, given that Cantor would immediately connect blackmail to Petraeus' early support of the false spontaneous video mob narrative.

Also at the time Petraeus was forced out, mistress Broadwell had already stated on Oct. 26 that Petraeus fully well knew it was a terrorist attack and knew that Delta Force had been requested...which you don't do for any irrate mob...and she intimated that Petraeus was frustrated that he had to support the mob story.

If true, this is completely bizarre.

He's a foolish, naive, self-serving dope. He was compromised!

I'll wager he was only afraid of his wife finding out!

All that means is that he was not the man that most of us thought! He should have resigned earlier or never taken the job of CIA director. Sorry for all of you non morality folks, but this is the kind of activity that is simply wrong on many levels. It interferes with his duties along with jeopardizing security.

Character does matter and he has shown his here (not his best side). Too bad that it effects the rest of his career but it should! I just wish that character mattered for the rest of the politicians these days.

If he actually had any decent character, he would not only resign but welcome testifying about Benghazi. That makes him a hypocrite with the best of politicians! As such, I expect nothing more or less (unfortunately)!

The October surprise two weeks too late. The November surprise is that Obama knew and kept it from the American public. I hope it proves out that the regime is so corrupt that the House impeaches Obama.

A man having an affair hopes things stay private? Fascinating. In other news, water is wet.

Cantor had an obligation to refer this tip to the appropriate house committees. I have read that the reason he didn’t is because he was not
sure if the tip was credible. Hogwash. If the tip was credible enough to
Turn over to the FBI, it was credible enough to turn over to his committees
And let his committee chairmen decide through hearings what the truth was.
All Cantor did was pass the buck. And I also don’t believe that he did not
Tell Bonehead.

Don’t really understand that response/question?

Could you be actually clear about what you are saying?

He was immoral and did not do the right thing. What are you suggesting that he do?
